Delta in toddlers

Can anyone help me with how Delta variant symptoms present in kids please? Trying to decide whether we need to take the toddler for a test thus buggering up our plans for the weekend, but symptoms are atypical for standard covid so not sure what’s best.

Can you share the symptoms?

louisvillelou · 09/07/2021 10:32

Cough, but he has an allergic cough so I have no idea if it's new

Temp spiking at night - not too high but noticeable and it wakes him up and makes him miserable

Diarrhoea - thought it was a bug but it’s persisting in a way that's odd for a stomach bug

Sore throat possibly, but he’s not exactly able to tell me (he's only 17mths)

Possibly headache but ditto above

Generally not well, cross and easily frustrated, clingy, very pathetic in the night and really needs me, going from sleeping through the night to waking at 4am looking and sounding rough

Pretty tired - 3hr naps rather than 1.5.

I spoke to the GP but tbh not sure she was really listening to me about delta, she was more interested in the chronic cough, which is fair enough as thats why i rang in the first place.

I mean, it could be anything or several things, he’s at nursery so picking up everything that’s going. But it all seems a bit odd to me, and then the receptionist asked if he'd had a PCR, and that started me wondering about covid, given delta presents with some odd symptoms.

You could take him for a test regardless.. the earlier you go the earlier you’ll get your raisins back, thus not completely buffering up all your weekend plans and also not contributing to the spread because of a ‘it might not be’

MyMabel · 09/07/2021 10:34

Results. Not sure who’s taken your raisins or if you’ll get them back.

kimlo · 09/07/2021 10:35

I would just get a pcr anyway. The results are typically coming back within 24 hours at the moment.

VaguelyInteresting · 09/07/2021 10:36

Take him for a test.
But surely if he’s that poorly your plans are off anyway?

ifonly4 · 09/07/2021 10:38

Really sorry, but he needs testing. If you haven't done so, book him in now - my DD got a slot within an hour a couple of weeks ago and results back in 15 hours, so you could well know by tomorrow lunchtime.

Nootkah · 09/07/2021 10:41

@louisvillelou sounds like teething? Has he already got his molars? If not, hes atvthe right age. Check the back of his gums before you panic.

louisvillelou · 09/07/2021 10:42

I’m glad you’ve all said this - it's the way my mind was going.

By plans, I mean work plans (sorry for not being clear - DH works weekends!) and a quick visit from DS godfather tonight which wouldn’t impinge too much on DS health and would cheer him up! But mostly it will impact DH work and my volunteering work. But it's the sensible thing to do imo.

(Getting raisins back would make DS very happy, though! 😁)

I think whether it's Delta variant or not is irrelevant. Its hard to know about the cough but should be tested if he has spiked a temp definitely.

He’s got his first 4 molars and some canines are edging through. I did wonder, but he’s never had teething issues like this before.

They really haven't been clear on what the delta symptoms are for anyone, let alone toddlers who can't articulate how they feel. I have a 2 year old who can't yet tell me if he has a headache or has lost his sense of smell.

In your situation, I would PCR test your little one, I think.

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 09/07/2021 11:00

My toddler has Covid currently - not sure what variant.
Light cough, evening temp, slightly loose poo, quite grumpy & clingy.

None of it came across as him feeling REALLY ill, more like a bit under the weather. He has had so many tests for various colds & viruses over the last year that we almost just assumed it would be negative again but it was positive.

louisvillelou · 09/07/2021 11:12

Well, GP has asked to see him to check the cough (as he doesn’t currently have a temp) so DH is going to ask her advice while they are there. Fingers crossed.
