New travel rules from Amber countries (specifically 18 year olds)

Interesting that those double vaccinated won't need to quarantine now on return from an amber country and neither will under 18s travelling with vaccinated parents.

This means that our single vaccinated son who is 18 would need to self-isolate for 10 days, whilst his 15 year old sister and parents don't have to. I know they are the rules but that is slightly bizarre as we will have been together. I assume other 19/20 year olds who could be travelling as part of a family group could be in the same situation.

Just get him his second dose early! Go on Reddit get jabbed to find out where he’ll probably be able to get it from 3 weeks. I got my 2nd Pfizer at 3.5 weeks the other day (I’m in England) largely to ensure I can go on holiday/ return without quarantine

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/07/2021 13:36

my DS2 is turning 18 and has just received an invited for 1st jab.

he is supposed to travel on the 27th - if he has 1st dose he could feel unwell, but either way he won't be double vaxxed and obv not under 18 anymore.
really shit timing

TimeForLunch · 08/07/2021 13:42

It is really unfortunate for just over 18s who will fall through the net. And like you say, makes little sense when parents and siblings will not have the same rules to follow.

The timing is not great for me either in a different way - due to arrive home from an amber country last thing at night on the 18th! So frustrating. I am assuming we will be bound by the old rules but hoping they may say those part way through quarantining can be released on the 19th.

@WhiskeryWoman silly question but how does Reddit work? I've just joined but it looks like a forum - do I just have to ask if anyone knows of a pop up clinic?
I'm outside of London in SW so haven't heard of any pop up clinics recently (they did one for the over 50s ages ago).

Its such a shame for those on the cusp but there has to be a cut off. Theres probably a bit of motivation to encourage younger adults to get vaccinated as soon as possible involved also.

bumbleymummy · 08/07/2021 16:43

Yep. It’s stupid. One isn’t more of a risk than the other. It’s just politics. The vaccinated have to be given some kind of ‘reward’.

Nootkah · 08/07/2021 16:45

The alternative was to wait until every adult had had the opportunity to have two vaccines (I imagine thats where 16th August came from?) but that would have further decimated the travel industry.

HairyFloppins · 08/07/2021 16:48

We have the same problem DD has her 2nd Moderna at the end of August and that will be too late for us to go anywhere then. It's a bit unfair really, but it is what it is.

She's had covid and one jab so would be considered fully vaccinated in some countries.

Yep, illogical

MikeHat · 08/07/2021 16:57

Reddit get jabbed seems to be all London.

Halloweenrainbow · 08/07/2021 17:08

If the aim realy is to prevent the spread of Covid then this approach makes no sense. Under 18s and double vaccinated adults can still catch and spread it. Just a way to encourage people to get their vaccines, I expect.

Some countries like Greece will take proof of a positive Covid test between the last 30 and 180 days to allow people to enter the country. Doesn't help you coming back though – she'd still have to quarantine for 10 days if not double jabbed.
