Amber countries and positive testing for return flight

Does anyone know if you have to test negative before taking the return flight home? The only info I can see is a PCR test must be done twice during return quarantine. Also if you do need to test negative before boarding and you get a positive result are you allocated a hotel to quarantine for ten days? Sorry for questions I just can’t find this info .

Yes you have to have a negative test (PCR or antigen) within 3 days of returning home. That's on the FCO website. Not sure what happens if you test positive, probably depends on the rules where you are going.

What do you mean by allocated a hotel? If you test positive then you won’t be allowed onto the plane or ferry. You will have to sort out isolation according to the rules of whatever country you are in.

Quarantine hotels? In the holiday country? Each country is different. You need to check the govt website of that country. And don't take the UK gov website as gospel.

There are some useful threads on the Holidays board- people in places like Greece, Spain and Portugal now who are explaining exactly what they had to do.

You need to get a test to bard the return flight and enter the UK. Can be antigen or pcr. Then you need to get a day 2 & 8 test when you get back. I believe you have to book the day 2 & 8 test and show proof of booking before boarding return flight. If you test positive abroad you'll need to isolate abroad. You won't be able to board a plane if you have Covid. I'm going to the USA in 10 days and I can't even think avoid catching Covid when I'm there! I'm double vaxxed and hoping for the best.

I booked my tests though medicspot and use code "BA" for a discount.

You have to show a negative PCR test to board the plane. I think that is what you are asking

I think the OP is asking what happens if you test positive before you travel home.

Op you won’t be allowed to board your flight / ferry / Eurostar etc. It’s unlikely that the host country will ‘put you up” - you would need to sort out accommodation at your own expense. And you’d need to follow the rules regarding isolation etc in the country where you are stuck. Presumably you’d have to be prepared to stay until you get a negative test to allow you to travel (not sure if there is an exemption for this if you can prove it’s say 10 days or whatever since you got your positive result).

So if you are travelling for a holiday rather than to see family (who you could extend your stay with) you need to make sure you have enough funds to cover accommodation costs and potentially replacement travel costs.

Thanks all that’s great. No I wasn’t expecting the host country to “ put us up” . What I did think was that I have heard of countries having designated quarantine hotels for these purposes at the traveller’s cost. We have our own place so I think we can just go back and isolate there if necessary rather than hotel. Here’s hoping to a happy healthy holiday Smile
