If the vaccine messed up your periods, how long did it take for them to go back to normal?

Had mine on the 25th May and thought it had just made mine come early but I’ve realised today that I’ve had two periods since then and both were double the length they usually are and have been much heavier.

I’m normally like clockwork, nothing ever affects it, I’ve had miscarriages, had a baby, etc etc and my period always came back bang on time.

I’ve been feeling so lethargic and awful lately and I’ve realised it’s since I had the vaccine and when I’ve looked at how many days I’ve been bleeding since then I’m not surprised !!

Just wondered if anyone had similar and if it’s been long enough for it to go back to normal yet?

This isn’t anti-vaccine by the way I’m definitely getting my second dose but I’m just wondering if I should expect this again after, or whether it’s likely to go back to normal.

It’s so weird!

Mine aren't back to normal yet. Exceptionally heavy (tampons and maternity towels together are not containing it for long). Second dose was three weeks ago. Not had a period since my second dose yet and I'm already late by a few days if I was on my normal cycle. Cycle was slightly shortened by a few days for each cycle after first shot. Astra Zeneca both times.

Bellasblankexpression · 05/07/2021 05:59

@beentoldcomputersaysno I had Pfizer and am experiencing the same. It’s so strange! I hope it settles down for you :(

Anyone else?

My period went awol after covid infection and after my first vaccine. I had huge drops in blood pressure at the start of my period in both cases, with heavy bleeding after the covid infection but not the vaccine.

It was back to normal post-covid after three months, but after covid infection I got watery diarrhoea for two weeks at the start of each period for 6 months. Not after the vaccine.

I've only had one period since my vaccine so I don't know if it's back to normal yet. The rest of me is definitely not back to normal post-vaccine and I have decided to put off having the second one until I can get to being a functioning human again.

Sorry to hear you're having such a hard time. It sounds really worrying for you. Flowers

StrongLegs · 05/07/2021 08:10

I'm also extremely pro-vaccine by the way. I would totally be getting vaccine 2 as well except that I have other really concerning side effects that are not resolving.

Bellasblankexpression · 05/07/2021 08:13

@StrongLegs sounds like you’ve had a rough time 😕 I hope things settle down for you soon

I had my first Pfizer on June 10th and haven’t had a period yet. It’s normally be around the 0th...I was putting it down to peri, but I have the second jab this week, so I’ll wait and see.

StrongLegs · 05/07/2021 08:16

@Bellasblankexpression Thanks, yes I feel as though I have had quite enough excitment for a decade this year.

Bellasblankexpression · 05/07/2021 08:22

@StrongLegs I don’t blame you! Think you deserve all the good health now!

@magicstar1fingers crossed you’ll be okay

Mine have been a mess and Iv been doubled jabbed since February. Unpredictable and just annoying.

Bellasblankexpression · 05/07/2021 08:35

@20viona were you regular before?

I’m a bit worried because I want to have another baby at some point and I don’t think I’ve ovulated since the vaccine either as I’ve had none of my usual symptoms

OP posts:
DolphinBlue1 · 05/07/2021 08:37

Double jabbed since April and I've only had one period since then and that was in June. It's very annoying

Bellasblankexpression · 05/07/2021 08:41

@DolphinBlue1 it seems to go either way, lots of bleeding or none at all
It’s bizarre, I’ve never had anything like this and been on different contraception etc, had a baby, had a miscarriage etc all things that disrupt your cycle and it’s always been on time and the same
I’ve never had heavy bleeding, been very lucky, got ever so slightly heavier after DS but nothing like this.
I can’t understand why the jab would have any affect on the menstrual cycle but
I’m not a doctor or scientist so…

They did originally say something like to think about if you had finished having children first but then it quickly go debunked that there was any issue with the jab and fertility etc so hopefully that still stands.

I’m still getting my second, I’m actually looking to bring it forward, but I feel so shit all the time and seriously over emotional, like I’ve had PMT for three quarters of the last month and a bit. It’s exhausting!

OP posts:
StrongLegs · 05/07/2021 09:06

@Bellasblankexpression That seems a bit concerning. Maybe you could get some ovulation sticks and check to see if you are still ovulating?

I used these and they work really well:
www.amazon.co.uk/One-Step-Sensitive-Ovulation-Fertility/dp/B001G7STT0/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&s=drugstore&keywords=Ovulation&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1625472154&sr=1-4

It's interesting that you are feeling over emotional too. I have had that in a really extreme way. About 4 weeks after my jab I woke up one morning and just sobbed my eyes out for an hour, actually hysterically in front of my son. I haven't had PMT like that since I was about 14 so it was very surprising. I didn't start a period then so I have no idea what's going on there.

I have had a lot of tearfulness since then, which is weird as I usually go the other way and bottle emotions up. I then got really wild panic symptoms which have now settled into a sort of feeling like I have heatstroke, or am recovering from concussion. It's properly strange.

I'm going to have an antibody test to see if I could get away with having just one vaccine. The French government have recommended that covid-survivors just have one, so maybe that would be okay for me, as I already had long covid.

Bellasblankexpression · 05/07/2021 09:23

@StrongLegs yes I think I’m going to because if I’m not I’ll speak to my GP.

Thanks for the link.

You’ll probably see from some of my other threads I’ve been a bit highly strung about some situations, particularly involving my best friend, I’ve been anxious and over thinking and over analysing, very tearful, exhausted, random overwhelming feelings of panic and woe is me etc - exactly like I used to get with periods as a teenager!

I hadn’t made the connection between my emotional state and the jab until recently when I clocked what was happening with my periods and that I’d only been feeling this way since the week after my jab.

Some of the heightened emotional state might be due to Covid and lockdown etc anyway as it’s been very mentally tough but it seems a bit of a coincidence

OP posts:
Bellasblankexpression · 05/07/2021 09:23

@StrongLegs the heatstroke description is exactly what I get!

OP posts:
Newbie8365 · 05/07/2021 09:27

I had my first jab (Pfizer) on a Thursday, the following Monday I started my period which lasted 12 days, I had 2 days with no bleed but now I've started bleeding / cramps again.

I am pro vaccine and just hope this is a small side effect but it is concerning Confused

Bellasblankexpression · 05/07/2021 09:40

It’s horrible isn’t it @Newbie8365
It’s a pretty serious side effect when you’re losing a lot more blood than normal more
Frequently

OP posts:
StrongLegs · 05/07/2021 09:40

@Bellasblankexpression it sounds like we are having a very similar problem. When I had that bad day of crying a lot I went on mumsnet and poured my heart out to some kind strangers and have been doing so in a series of threads ever since. It really has helped very much, but I know this is not my normal state, so it is a bit concerning. I hadn't been on mumsnet for years before that.

I was quite highly strung before, but more inclined to be hyperactive rather than tearful.

It's really interesting that you have the heatstroke thing as well. I feel so relieved to know that it's not just me. It's awful, because I wouldn't wish this on anyone, but it's lovely to know that I'm not the only one.

I did wonder if it was partly from the stress of the year as it has been epic, stress-wise, but I really don't think it is. Usually stress affects me in different ways. This is totally different.

Bellasblankexpression · 05/07/2021 09:45

@StrongLegs yes! I think some of my threads make me sound a bit like a lunatic but I have said repeatedly I’m not feeling myself. I put it down to having an 18 month old in a pandemic etc, my career fizzling out due to Covid and I’m sure it’s all contributed but that was going on for months prior to this overly emotional state

The heat stroke thing is bizarre I’ve had it a few times, sometimes just in the house, sometimes just on the way back from a short walk and I’ve had to come in and lie down!

I hope it doesn’t last too long but as I haven’t had my second yet I’m fully expecting it to continue for while :-/

Watching with interest to find the answer.

I got jabbed over a month ago but still experiencing side effects.

PaleGreenGhost · 05/07/2021 10:02

First dose in Feb. Still messed up cycles. Long, short, short, short, long. It's extremely annoying, especially when longer because of pregnancy fears and longer cycles seem to really exacerbate pmt symptoms.

I'm also extremely grateful to be fully vaccinated. Just wish I knew how long this was going to last for.

Natsku · 05/07/2021 10:21

My periods are usually very regular, bang on 28 days, but I've had two since my first jab and the first was 2 days early and the second was 5 days early. Luckily that's it, not heavier than normal or any other issues, but I hope it goes back to normal cycle length soon.

StrongLegs · 05/07/2021 13:37

@Bellasblankexpression it's amazing how similar your situation is to mine. I really feel just as you describe.

I'm looking into getting an antibody test to see if I have enough to manage without a second jab. I'll let you know what I find when it's done.
