How long to isolate?

I'm just curious - we will 100% follow the advice from Test and Trace.

DS came home from school on Thursday with a sore throat, into Friday and Saturday morning no other symptoms (I sent him to school on Friday) just the sore throat. Then yesterday (Saturday) afternoon he developed a temp of 38degrees and later a cough and headache. I booked him in for a PCR which was first this this morning. Waiting for the result now, wouldn't be shocked with either result but I was just wondering, if positive - will the 10 days start from the day he developed the temp/cough (Saturday) or the day of his first symptom (Thursday, sore throat) esp since I believe sore throat is a common symptom of Delta COVID.

10 days from day of symptoms or if no symptoms day of test .
Is sore throat a symptom?
So I’d from day of symptoms temperature/ cough on Saturday.

It’ll be the symptom (not the cough as that’s not recognised officially), but if he tests positive you will be told when to isolate until.

StealthPolarBear · 05/07/2021 09:59

Persistent cough is absolutely a recognised symptom

RocioMartinez · 05/07/2021 10:08

He will have to isolate for 10 days from when symptoms started. Close contacts will also have to isolate for 10 days - but their 10 days start 48 hours before his first symptoms appeared on the basis that he can be contagious before showing symptoms.

So if he isolates from Saturday his close contacts will be asked to isolate for 10 days from Thursday. Our schools are also asking close contacts to get a PCR test on day 5 even if no symptoms.

SuperRabbitGasPod · 05/07/2021 10:44

We are still waiting the result. 27hrs and counting.

I was just curious whether the sore throat will count as the start of symptoms but I guess not. I feel bad now that I sent him to school on Friday but it was literally just a sore throat at that point.

He is in his uniform ready to go to school as soon as we get the results, I said he could wear mufti but nope! His cough is still fairly bad so no way could I have sent him in without testing 🤞🤞🤞 we get the results soon!

Sorry, that should have read sore throat, I changed my sentence then didn’t re-read!

LadyPenelope68 · 05/07/2021 10:52

@SuperRabbitGasPod

I had a test on Saturday and they said results can be up to 48 hours and not to chase until then. Mine did actually cane back in less than 24, but a work colleague who had hers later the same day has only just hers this morning.

hopeishere · 05/07/2021 10:53

Why did you send him to school with a sore throat?!

SuperRabbitGasPod · 05/07/2021 10:55

@hopeishere

Why did you send him to school with a sore throat?!
Because I sore throat isn't a testable (or isolat-able) symptom? Because I didn't think it was a good reason to keep him off school? Because school asks us to send them in unless they have one of the Big Three symptoms?

Is he primary age?
With my secondary age children I do a lateral flow if they are a bit ill (headache, stomach ache, sore throat, not covid symptoms) before going to school.

He is only 8

I thought it was common knowledge that a sore throat was a delta variant symptom.

SuperRabbitGasPod · 05/07/2021 14:57

@hopeishere even if that was common knowledge (don't know if it is) you can't get a test based on having a sore throat - would you have kept him off for 10 days just based on a sore throat with no test?

OP posts:
FawnFrenchieMum · 05/07/2021 15:04

Our school sent our updated symptoms for the delta variant (including a sore throat) and said going forward anyone with the additional symptoms will be sent home to isolate and get a test.

I'd have just clicked yes on the symptoms question

Ahh well that's fair enough though I would still have been uncomfortable lying to get a test. Our school has said no such thing.

It's pretty well known now that a sore throat is a symptom with the delta variant so I've no idea why school aren't treating it as one.
