Will working from home be dropped? Opinions?

OP posts:

My company is moving over to Agile/Flexible working, which translates into, those who are happy and able to work from home can continue to do so and only attend for a meeting if required to do so face to face, but for those who prefer to work in the office we will have some desks that can be prebooked for staff to use in the office.

Canigooutyet · 04/07/2021 19:58

Regardless of if the government change the message and lift restrictions, ultimately it will be down to individual companies how they will continue to operate.
If the company decides everyone to return, those that aren't happy will be able to put in a request staring why it's in the companies best interests for that person to remain wfh.

We are now hybrid workers but our offices are opening on July 19th. We are expected in twice per week. If we feel poorly with any illness (not just covid symptoms), we are expected to stay at home. The company have seen a 90% drop in sickness absence since last March 😱😱

LightasaBreeze · 05/07/2021 05:41

It wasn't law though just guidance so it may just get a small mention, I thing tonights announcement about the 19th is mainly about the legal restrictions like masks, groups of people and checking in on the app

LightasaBreeze · 05/07/2021 05:45

In the DM it just says the wfh order will be dropped so that will be up to the company you work for.

Mintjulia · 05/07/2021 05:52

All our staff now have contracts with 4 day wfh/1 day office clauses. We've moved to a serviced office where we book facilities by the day and the ceo has moved 250 miles from London. So for us, yes, it's permanent.

Sloaneslone · 05/07/2021 05:58

Its weird how on working from home threads, so many people insist everyone will have to go back to the office. That most businesses are going back. That the minute big businesses go back, everyone else will follow.

But then, on here non of us are going back FT. And in RL I don't know anyone who is going back FT. And we have all had it confirmed as a permanent change.

Is just London offices people are expecting to go back FT?

ItsAllBlahBlahBlah · 05/07/2021 06:07

The company I work for are going back really slowly, so noone back until November. On top of that, my particular office has been closed as the lease was running out and they decided not to renew it, so I'm one of the lucky ones (IMO) that is going to be wfh for good. I work 3days (p/t). I'm overjoyed tbh. I hated my office, and definitely get more work done from home.

LightasaBreeze · 05/07/2021 06:52

I mistakenly said upthread that the announcement is tonight, I think it is actually next week but the papers are full of it as if it was today's announcement so a bit hard to tell

Sparklingbrook · 05/07/2021 06:56

My friend has been told her WFH is now forever. She is thrilled. She has teenage DC and a dog, had a long commute and rubbish parking.

I don't think WFH is that good for everyone though, depends on the individual. And it's up to the company to decide what's right for them.

ineedaholidaynow · 05/07/2021 08:23

@Sloaneslone we’ve had quite a few people move down here from London this year as they can now WFH. It will be a very long commute if it turns out they can’t

NotTerfNorCis · 05/07/2021 08:42

There's a powerful article in today's Guardian about this: www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/05/idea-of-commuting-fills-me-with-dread-workers-on-returning-to-the-office Basically people have realised they can do their job without the hassle and expense of commuting, and they really don't want to go back.

I really hope they had confirmation that they were wfh before they moved. Shock

Maybe people saying that most businesses are recalling people full time, are just speculating?

Seems weird so many people are convinced most are going back full time, when that doesn't seem the reality for a lot of people.

Hotcuppatea · 05/07/2021 08:47

In the team I work in, most people will be able to sustain a hybrid model, but the nature of the work means that they will need to be present in the office at least one day a week. There's already some push back on this and I know lots of people won't be happy about returning. It's going to be as big an adjustment as the initial forced working from home was.
