Confused about isolation rules

Sorry I'm a bit confused about isolation rules.

Ds1 had to vacate his Uni house last sunday. He developed covid symptoms when he had half an hour to leave the house, so we had to let him come home, he went straight into isolation. So we had no contact with him prior but of course he is having to use family bathroom. When he returned to had 2 negative LF tests and on monday had a PCR test and results negative on wed. He continued to isolate as people he had socialised with the day he left his Uni town tested positive. He had a further pcr test on friday and it has come back positive today. So clearly he must have contracted covid over a week ago as he could not have since picked it up since.
Do we now all have to isolate for ten days from now or for another 3 days. We have not been isolating since the first test came back negative on wednesday as obviously we thought he was negative and his symptoms had largely gone. Have we done anything wrong and how long do we need to isolate for now ? Any help appreciated.

I should also add me and dh are double jabbed, two ds's have had first jab, 16 year old dd no jabs. Ds who has got covid has had no jabs. I know this doesn't make any difference to isolation rules. DH is clinically vulnerable with severe asthma on immunosuppressant drugs.

Household has to isolate if anyone in the household has symptoms, by sounds of it he had symptoms before the positive test so you should have all been isolating already and absolutely definitely all of the household isolating from the positive test

Hophop26 · 04/07/2021 14:52

But a pain if you isolated until his negative pcr as yes will restart on the positive test I think

Twokitstwokats · 04/07/2021 14:56

If he had symptoms and a negative you don't isolate. As he now has a positive you do. Test and trace will contact you and talk you through it.

Twokitstwokats · 04/07/2021 14:57

Out of interest, why did he keep testing if symptoms had largely gone and he had already had a negative?

Yes you do as household members, it's dated 10 days from his test

I think because the people he was with in his Uni house had since tested positive so he was convinced he had it too. They had a gathering outside ( within rules) and a few of those there have all tested positive. goes to show just how infectious this new varient is even outside.

No it isn't. Test and trace will talk to you but it is usually from symptoms, not from test.

Hoping it is. How long does it take for test and trace to contact us after a positive test.

My husband tested positive this morning, I've been notified via the covid app that I must isolate for 10 days from yesterday (the date of his test). He has to isolate for ten days from Friday (the date his symptoms started). So you will need to isolate for ten days from the date of your son's positive PCR but he will be out sooner.

I hope he feels better soon and doesn't pass it on to you and the rest of the family Smile

Twokitstwokats · 04/07/2021 19:24

We had a positive last week. Test and trace contacted us later the same day. Told us to isolate for 10 days from start of symptoms.

And this contradicts what left the washing out has been told. So confused ?? If we isolate for 10 days from when symptoms started we would be out of isolation by this wed, but if it's from the positive test it will be ten days time !
