School sent DS home

Yesterday DS had a slight cough and a temp of 36.6 and the school sent him home and ordered him to get a PCR test. We did this but had to do the test ourselves as he's under 12. We are awaiting the results. We are 100% sure its hayfever as we get it every year. Our weekend is now ruined and I had no idea that even if he's negative (which he will be), he has to self isolate for 10 days! This imo is madness. We did a lateral flow test and it was negative. Told the school and they said it's not accurate as they only show asymptomatic cases!
Can I complain to the school and ask them to reconsider his exclusion? He has no symptoms and hasn't coughed for hours. Can we get the gp to confirm it's hay fever?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

If its negative he doesn't need to isolate at all ...who's told you this?

ShaunTheSheepish · 03/07/2021 06:23

I had to get my child tested last week. Did the test at lunchtime on Saturday, got the results at 1am that night. They’re quick now, it shouldn’t ruin your weekend as long as it’s negative

ellesbellesxxx · 03/07/2021 06:26

They are right about the lateral flow tests not to be used for symptoms but if the pcr is negative, of course he doesn’t have to isolate… did school say he did?

BooseysMom · 03/07/2021 06:26

@Wellbythebloodyhell.. the lateral flow home test was negative, the one they insisted we do we are awaiting results of

As pp said you can stop isolation as soon as you receive a negative PCR result. The school are correct in asking for a test if he was coughing and are also correct to say that a lateral flow test is not for symptoms or for under 12s.

It's on the gov.uk website. It says 10 days I'm sure

If he gets a negative result on the PCR he does not need to isolate. Did the school say he does?

FluffyPJs · 03/07/2021 06:28

You only have to isolate for 10 days after a negative PCR if you had a positive lateral flow test first

girlmom21 · 03/07/2021 06:29

@BooseysMom I think you've misunderstood what the website says. He'd only need to continue isolation if he'd been in contact with someone who's tested positive if his test result comes back negative

Clickbait · 03/07/2021 06:29

Can you link to the bit on the website?

Mindymomo · 03/07/2021 06:29

It may be hayfever or it could be covid, you will find out when you get PCR test. Unfortunately a cough is a symptom, no matter what. School is only following guidelines.

ginsparkles · 03/07/2021 06:31

We had to do one on our DD9 last week. Did the test at 6pm on the Tuesday night. Had the result by 10am on Wednesday. Assuming you get a negative result, you won't have the weekend ruined, the results are coming through really quickly.

Spekoppar · 03/07/2021 06:31

You have to wait for the PCR result as he has a cough but school should be letting him back once that comes back, assuming it’s negative. They’re right not to accept the lft result.

moovinon · 03/07/2021 06:33

My Daughter was sent home from nursery the other day with a temperature and a cough. She had the PCR test & results came through by 5am the next morning. I sent the negative test results to nursery and then just took her in the next day.

I don't think I you have to isolate for 10 days if you get a negative result. No one stopped me from taking my Daughter in anyway?

I meant if the PCR test is negative you don't need to isolate for 10 days why do you think you do? 10 day isolating is only if you get a positive PCR result

I'm sorry but I can't find it now..I'm searching frantically! I'm sure it was gov.uk. if this is true that he can go back, I'm so happy but I'm sure I read it's 10 days. I've been awake all night with peri hot flushes and feel like a wreck!!

Thanks everyone btw Smile

Unless he has a cough and also was a close contact is the only reason he’d have to isolate 10 days after a negative PCR test.

BooseysMom · 03/07/2021 06:38

This. This could be what I read!

Just bare in mind schools don’t want bubbles to burst so if a child is coughing regularly they will be sent home for a test. Can you imagine another 10 days of online home learning?! I most definitely don’t want too. We all want children in school. Hope your sons results come back soon

Crumblysausage · 03/07/2021 07:15

My DS had similar, his PCR test came back negative at 9.20am and he was back in school by 10am, they dont need to isolate once its been confirmed its not covid.

YukoandHiro · 03/07/2021 07:16

You should get a result within 15 hours of the test so hopefully your weekend will be ok!

36.6 isn't even a temp! Anything over 37.5 is a temp and it's now clinically significant til 38.

YukoandHiro · 03/07/2021 07:17

He definitely doesn't have to isolate if it's negative.

You'll get an email telling you what to do with the result. It says go about your life unless you get more symptoms, then test again if needed

lborolass · 03/07/2021 07:22

Take a breath and think calmly - what would be the point of PCR tests if everyone who took one had to isolate regardless of the result?

couchparsnip · 03/07/2021 07:29

DS had this exact scenario. He was sent home for coughing in a lesson, it's hay-fever and he forgot to take his tablet that morning. They sent DD home as well.
They both did PCR tests and the school allowed them back when the results came back negative.

BooseysMom · 03/07/2021 07:39

Thank you. Still no result. I'm fretting now as we have advanced booked tickets for a festival.

Thanks everyone. Smile

The thing as well is that I dropped the test on the floor trying to snap the stick to put it in the tube! Also DS wouldn't let me do it very thoroughly. His throat was ok ..I got a good swab there...but he hated me putting it in his nose!!
