Ds 2 caught covid end of Nov 2020 and then again end of May. Second time he had barely noticeable symptoms - a very slight cough. We only tested because he'd been sent home from school to self isolate. This last week he's started with a chesty cough, runny nose and sore throat. I'm in two minds to test again but obviously there's a good chance it will be positive from the previous episode in May. Is there any point re-testing or is it impossible for him to have covid a 3rd time within such a short timescale ?

I would test.

I would test as he’s been in school so if he has it again others need to know.

It's too soon to retest, if he gets a positive then it could be from the infection in May. Other viruses exist too and he could have both an old covid infection plus something else. It is very unusual to catch covid multiple times unless there is some underlying vulnerability, so unless he needs treatment I personally wouldn't retest. You don't need to say if he has any conditions of course, but if you aren't aware of an underlying illness then it's really worth talking to a GP to find out what is weakening his immune system. If he's sent for full tests in hospital then they could test for a range of things not just covid, which might be present but not be causing the current symptoms. (I know a toddler who tested positive for 4 different viruses when sent to hospital for unknown illness pre-covid, no wonder he was ill!)

I think you have to check but literally, all the little kids in school have runny noses and chesty little coughs at the moment. I think it’s because they didn’t catch them in winter. I don’t think it will be covid.

I think the advice is not to retest within 90 days unless new symptoms- he has new symptoms- so I would.

Sanguinesuzy · 02/07/2021 23:03

Thanks everyone will get him to retest. He's otherwise well. Doesn't actually feel ill. The day it dawned on me to that it could be covid he'd done 3 sessions of basketball Blush.

Get his immune system sorted...vit d, fruit and veg, water, good sleep. Hope he recovers soon OP.

Sanguinesuzy · 03/07/2021 07:46

@Valhalla17 good advice. He’s nearly 14 but bedtimes have got later and later and fruit intake is rubbish !

You aren't meant to test within 90 days
