Currently disagreeing with dh. Is it possible to get second Pfizer jab as early as 21 days after the first in the UK?

So, it looks like we need to defer family holiday to Jersey since 18 year old dd had her first pfizer jab on 30 June. Deferring is disappointing but what can you do? - we just need to suck it up.

Jersey are now insisting that all adults are fully vaccinated with both jabs in order to visit, so to go to Jersey on 9 August as planned, dd would have to have her 2nd jab by 23 July (to allow the 14 days after the 2nd jab for the vaccine to 'take')

Dh is saying she could have her second jab at a walk in centre 3 weeks after the first. I am saying that since her first was on 30 June then 21 days after the first is 22 July which is tighter than a ducks arse in terms of meeting the 23 July deadline. I am also sceptical that she could just walk in to a walk in centre on 22 July and guarantee getting a second jab.

Who is right?

Depends on your local authority and their vaccine supply. Currently our guidelines (NW) are 8 weeks for 40+ 11 weeks under 40. Authority to too have vaccines earlier are sanctioned by GP and are purely for medicinal .clinical need not a social need like going on holiday

FlatToppedTree · 02/07/2021 23:00

Our local centre is accepting walk ins for 2nd jabs with a 3 week gap. Looks like it depends on area.

@FizzyPink sorry, no! (Further west!)

I started looking into going to Jersey when England first lifted the ban on travel, and I've been keeping half an eye on Jersey's rules. Unless I have misread at the moment if you are travelling from England, because the whole of England is red list, you have to take tests on Day 0, Day 5 and Day 10 and have to self isolate until a negative day 10 test, regardless of vaccination status. Scotland is also Red, although Wales is Green if you're travelling from there OP. Obviously things could change by the time you're due to travel. I decided not to risk it.

Pfizer licensed for a 3 week gap.
The Uk chose to increase the gap to vaccinate more people.

Obviouspretzel · 02/07/2021 23:09

I was invited for second Pfizer within three weeks in my area.

Ignore me OP, I have just read more detail and I had misunderstood what England Red List means. I read it as being any area in England which Jersey list as Red (which is all of England) but it actually means countries which are on England's red list. That'll teach me to try understanding covid entry rules late at night!

It's not quite that. If you are double vaccinated you can either take your own private PCR test less than 72 hours before you travel (and not isolate) or you can have a PCR on arrival and isolate for 12 hours until result comes through

Yep I just realised I misread, apologies.

Australia and 21 days after first

LemonCake79 · 03/07/2021 08:36

Here the walk in centres are being asked to be very strict on the 8 weeks. I will be 8 weeks on Monday and rang to see if I could attend the walk in centre this weekend. The woman was very apologetic and nice but said they have been asked to strictly apply the 8 weeks.

It's a bit frustrating because my appointment is at 9 weeks and five days so I would have thought it preferable for me to have it at seven weeks and six days.

Bobholll · 03/07/2021 13:38

The walks in my area advertise 8 weeks BUT if you go, they are letting anyone in post 21 days. I got mine at 5 weeks. My neighbour 3 weeks.

But might be worth checking, are countries saying anyone with 2 jabs or is there a time period after the second jab that it’s acceptable to travel?

lap90 · 03/07/2021 14:31

I mean, yeah your husband is right. I got my 2nd jab 28 days after the first at a walk in but i know others got their second jab and continue to get it 21 days after the first jab. It is ultimately dependant on where you go tbh. Some walk ins are strictly enforcing 6 or 8 weeks post the first vaccine, others will do 21 days after the first vaccine at their discretion (not widely publicised by the walk in centre). The issue you'll have is there's no guarantee there will be a walk in on the date you want.

That's the thing - might get lucky, might not. I think I would rather just defer the holiday for a year and take the stress out of it

All the drop ins say 8 weeks here and I believe it’s strictly enforced. All the GP surgeries stuck strictly to the age limits when some other neighbouring towns were doing their own thing.

3 weeks is a long time in the vax programme, so anything could happen by then. If you were going to lose your holiday money then I probably wouldn’t chance it.

lap90 · 03/07/2021 15:21

@LimitIsUp Yes, i agree. It's cutting it a bit fine with the dates. Too risky.

Tell her to follow the GetJabbed subreddit. It should be possible but she might have to travel.
