School cases - quick straw poll

For those of you who had a child identified as a "close contact", did your child / many in the class go on to test positive?

You can probably guess what the phone call I've just taken was about!!

Yes others caught it but were virtually asymptomatic. I suspect lots more were positive but blissfully unaware.

MavisMavis · 04/07/2021 10:43

Not me personally, but at our school, y8 had to isolate due to a handful of Covid cases... by day 9 of the isolation more than 50 positive cases had been confirmed and some were still testing positive on day 9 of isolation!

MavisMavis · 04/07/2021 10:43

Varying degrees of illness, from asymptomatic to quite poorly.

xyzandabc · 04/07/2021 10:44

2 schools, both secondary.

School one with 10+ cases, some positives have been in those already isolating as close contacts. So school transmission looks likely.

School two with 6 cases, all completely unrelated to each other, no further cases in those isolating as close contacts, school transmission looks unlikely.

Maybe completely unrelated but both schools have not required masks in class since the gov guidance changed. Also aware that the plural of anecdote is not evidence!

In school one most no longer wear masks in class. In school two most students have decided to keep wearing masks in class even though they don't have to.

School one have made the decision to go back to mandatory mask wearing in class as of Monday.

@hopeishere

Straw not draw...
Nothing to do with the thread but how did you get the title changed, have you got an edit function?
hopeishere · 04/07/2021 14:09

@caughtinanet I didn't!! It must have been changed by the magic hands of Mumsnet!!

No, none, this is from my own kids bubbles and the classes at the school where I work. That's why I think it is absolutely right that the isolation rules get changed.

Zandathepanda · 04/07/2021 17:24

I think seventy are out at the moment from Dds year. One positive followed by three positives from the isolated group.
Another year has about 8 positives out from two different sources. But not that many isolating from that year group - I don’t know the details why.

LadyPenelope68 · 04/07/2021 20:29

I’m in a hotspot area and our school was closed by Public Health on Thursday for a week due to the high number of cases in children in school (numerous in each bubble). Two other schools in the area also closed in same way.

Lupinhere37 · 05/07/2021 00:37

Multiple cases in our school reported this weekend, across all age groups and teaching staff too. Obvious school transmission. Some kids had already been isolating since last week, now cases are growing in number.

newlabelwriter · 05/07/2021 06:33

At my DSs school half of his year are having to isolate at the moment- it’s rife.

Kitcat122 · 05/07/2021 06:37

1symptomatic positive led to 15 asymptomatic positives. However that was just from parents who randomly tested so possibly lots more not tested.

Stinkysteamy · 05/07/2021 06:40

My friends child's year group has had to isolate 3 times since the spring return. All additional cases were friends of the original who they socialised with outside of school.

Maladicta · 05/07/2021 06:43

Yes - ds was a close contact, 3 in the class went on to get it so the whole year was sent home. One family then all proceeded to catch it even with two of the adults being double-jabbed. Was definitely less severe than if they’d not been immunised. As a result, I’m still taking prevention seriously.

HairyToity · 05/07/2021 07:15

Yes. My children had a very mild virus though. One was asymptomatic the other coughed a few times at bedtime, for a couple of nights. I was surprised how mildly they had it.

PiccalilliChilli · 05/07/2021 07:22

3 isolations. During second and third DD was tested negative. (First isolation testing wasn't in full swing)

PeonyTime · 05/07/2021 07:23

10% of year 10 have a positive covid pcr currently.

PiccalilliChilli · 05/07/2021 07:26

(To add) DD was in contact with girl who sparked the first isolation but DD had no symptoms.

Pinchoftums · 05/07/2021 07:30

Over our lot 6 isolations led to one period of isolation in which at least 12 kids got ill. The rest none had that I knew of.

Tiddleztheelephant · 05/07/2021 07:34

Between me and ds we have had 4 burst bubbles so far, none of them developed into more than a single case.

The only time I can think that it happened was in our EYFS, a child got it so the bubble burst then 5 days later the teacher got it.

NotQuiteUsual · 05/07/2021 07:43

My DDs class only has 1 positive a week later. But the other classes in her year group have quite a few. Looking at which children have it, it looks to be focused in one social group and then spread. Since only one child in DDs class was in that group, this class outbreak got caught early enough to stop the spread. The other classes weren't.

Comefromaway · 05/07/2021 07:47

1st time - boy tested positive. His girlfriend caught it then about 10 others

2nd time - girl tested positive. Another followed a couple of days afterwards. By day 5 there were 7 more cases including dd

Whyarewehardofthinking · 05/07/2021 08:47

We have seen every scenario, but it is secondary so a bit different. We have had instances with no further positives but since the delta variant we have always seen additional positives pop up. Before Christmas it was a mix. In the past month the smallest 'outbreak' was another 3 students and the largest 19 across 3 classes that the first student had been in. We've had about 50% staff test positive too when they have been isolating from contact with a student.

Hotcuppatea · 05/07/2021 08:49

My sons bubble has popped twice. Both times, it was the first child only, no other positives.

Canigooutyet · 05/07/2021 08:58

. There's currently at least 4 in one class at secondary so a lot to be sent home due to the nature of secondary classes. And the isolation we've just come out off there was around 20. We'd had a really good run from January until the last holiday and things have quickly gone downhill just like when they went back in September.
