HCP's are you seeing a surge in hospitalisations?

I work on a ward identified as a designated Covid ward. We were running as a normal ward up to about 3 weeks ago with no Covid cases in the hospital.
We are now seeing an increase in cases and they are unwell. Just as unwell as the other waves.

I feel disheartened as the second wave hit us very hard and we were only just recovering from it as a team. The talk of a third wave has heightened and they are planning for a significant surge in Covid admissions.
Are other hospitals the same? How are other HCP's feeling? Any tips for rebuilding resilience quickly?

I work in A&E and there has definitely been a rise but nowhere near as many as the second wave. We are seeing 5-10 positives a day and they arent as poorly at all and some even get discharged.

We are seeing a lot more younger people coming in, whether thats because they havent been vaccinated/fully vaccinated im not sure.

There’s certainly a small uptick.
Check these graphs out for hospitalisation.

Not a HCP but are we not at risk of problems staffing hospitals even if the numbers if hospitalisations don't increase drastically? I'm hearing about far more people self-isolating or testing positive, not surprising given the soaring cases, and also reduction in some (non-health-related) services because of staff shortages. I understand that because of vaccination the stress on NHS beds isn't like it was before, but I'm not sure how it will cope with the inevitable staff absences.

@Baystard yes absolutely staffing is massively affected at the moment. I've never seen staffing with no many gaps across all HCP' but nursing is particularly bad. Its a worry, as the hospital is full trying to do more on less staff and we are already so tired.
@addictedtotheflats thats reassuring. We were like that for a couple of weeks but now seeing more with high oxygen requirements and CPAP. We are just hoping the numbers wont be as high as last time.

They are mostly unvaccinated patients so it is reassuring the vaccine is working.

Thank you @VaccineSticker its good to see the data. The regional evidence of Covid is high where I am so we are probably seeing more patients than other areas.

At the height of the second wave we had 500 COVID patients in our (large teaching) hospital. It got down to 6 about 3 weeks ago and is now up to 29. So an increase, but no where near as bad as it’s been previously.

Nobble · 01/07/2021 22:06

@Spudina wow 500 thats a huge amount. I dont think our hospital has that many beds!
We also currently have a fraction of the numbers we had, I just hope it doesnt rise too much further
