I understand that she’s been in close contact with a member of her team who subsequently tested positive for Covid. But she has tested negative and doesn’t have it. So why is she still required to self isolate for 10 days and miss Wimbledon for a disease she doesn’t have? Confused

Because of the 10 day incubation period for this virus. Despite the negative test she may still develop it in the next few days (from this exposure, not a new one).

Clickbait · 30/06/2021 07:30

That's why all the school children have to isolate for 10 days even if they test negative. I'm not saying I agree with it but it's not fair to have one rule for sportspeople and another for the rest of us.

bluewanda · 30/06/2021 07:30

I see, thanks @Clickbait. How frustrating for her.

Here's the incubation period

Because tennis isn't as popular as football? Because she's female? Who knows. But the double standards stink when Scotland could carry on playing and not isolate...

Clickbait · 30/06/2021 07:36

I agree that the Scottish football team not having to isolate was an absolute joke.

sashagabadon · 30/06/2021 10:29

It’s ridiculous! She must be fuming. Wonder if same would have applied to Andy Murray

idontlikealdi · 30/06/2021 13:18

Because the whole thing is a farce

Delatron · 30/06/2021 13:30

Because it’s tennis and not football... I’d be fuming if I was her.

Oldpeoplesprinting · 30/06/2021 13:46

It’s ridiculously unfair. I’d be so angry if were her!

Delatron · 30/06/2021 13:57

I’d be popping a Scotland football shirt and hanging out of my hotel room for the photographers to make a point if I were her!

Emmacb82 · 30/06/2021 14:04

I don’t understand why she couldn’t have just continued to test daily and carry on playing. She would hardly come into contact with anyone on the court! The ball boys/girls don’t even hand them their towel anymore so far less contact than the Scottish football team the other week. She must feel absolutely gutted.

spanishchica · 30/06/2021 14:22

Didn't the lovely Mr Gove recently come into contact with a positive case during his trip to see Chelsea play in Portugal? He was asked to test daily and didn't have to isolate?

Didn't he miss the Australian Open because he'd tested positive and there wasn't enough time for him to finish that isolation and fly to Australia to start another 14 day hotel isolation?

I know it is tempting to pin the difference in handling positive tests football vs. tennis on HMG and grumble about how unfair it all appears to be (which it does) but aren’t the protocols down to the governing bodies for the individual sports/tournaments?
newnortherner111 · 30/06/2021 17:09

Because we are so desperate to have a successful female tennis player who is British (or at least has British citizenship). A person born in Australia and who only became a British citizen aged 21.

Same as Chris Froome who even represented Kenya in the Commonwealth Games.

Just to back up what you've said... a family member was advised to isolate having been a close contact and was absolutely fine until he developed symptoms on day 10 and went on to test positive for covid.

There is a good reason for the isolation period.

She’s positive.

Let this be a lesson to everyone.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 14/07/2021 06:42

Yes, that is exactly the reason for isolating
