How close to 18 years old do you need to be to book on national booking system?

Can anyone help with this. My DS is 18 in August and hopefully going to university in September so would benefit from having both jabs before then. Thanks

You have to book the first one on or after your 18th birthday.

Skippetyskip · 23/06/2021 20:53

Just wondered if the system let you book early as it has in the past with other ages, sometimes before the front page of the booking has been changed

He could just keeping putting his details into the system and see. I've been able to move my appointment a month earlier and wasn't expecting to be able to.

titchy · 23/06/2021 21:09

Well he could try and book his appointment now couldn't he? It prob won't give him dates before his birthday though.

MummytoCSJH · 23/06/2021 21:16

My sister is turning 18 at the end of July and when she put her details in she was told she can book exactly 1 month before her 18th birthday

Skippetyskip · 23/06/2021 21:32

Thanks MummytoCSJH that's really useful to know

DD is less than one month from her 18th birthday and the system is still telling her she is ineligible.

Akire · 23/06/2021 22:07

I was hoping they would make exception for this as a fellow end of august baby. Everyone else in your year group at school/college can have it but you can’t until after your birthday. Even though leave you with less protection than everyone else you spend all day with. Surely year groups should be treated the same? Some people will qualify 1st September some 364 days later- same classrooms!

Skippetyskip · 23/06/2021 22:08

Does anyone know if any walk in centres vaccinate those who are nearly 18

OP posts:
Skippetyskip · 23/06/2021 22:11

Akire, I agree. And also they may go to university in September without the benefit of 2 vaccines and hence be at high risk of contracting and spreading the virus

I suppose you could try ask GP and say they are going into halls and need time after jab to get immunity up and see if they will do it a month early. It’s not like there isn’t enough around and what’s 30 days when thousands adults will be moving all over country.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 23/06/2021 22:14

You really do have to be 18.

Just as youreally had to be the age of all the other groups as it rolled down the list

No you didn't. You could book if you turned that age this year
bennyjet · 23/06/2021 22:17

My 16 year was vaccinated as I was previously shielding he was able to book via the normal website

Akire · 23/06/2021 22:20

Just seems over sight that some adults will miss it when everyone else in their uni halls by luck is protected or some cases fully protected before them. You only talking those turn 18 in next 8 weeks to be considered. Everyone in year below that at school will he staying where are not mixing from all over county /world.

Redcrayons · 23/06/2021 22:24

Nope. I’m 50 on Saturday, couldn’t book on till the day they announced it was open to late 40s. I tried many times before then.

I think they’ll start with 16 plus in august before schools start back.

amicissimma · 23/06/2021 22:25

I was speaking to someone who went to a walk in centre with her 17-year-old (not close to 18). At first they were told he was too young, but after a conflab with the manager the person said it was OK. Another 17-year-old that they knew who was there also got a jab, then they changed to over 18s only.

So it's worth trying the walk ins early in the day - you might strike lucky.

LizzieMacQueen · 23/06/2021 23:12

In Scotland about half of freshers will be 17. Not exactly ideal is it with shared facilities in accommodation. Maybe I'll speak to the GP about getting my 17 yo vaccinated before he goes.

Rubbish, I'm 45, no health issues, first jab in Feb, second jab may
