A girl my son sits directly next to in several lessons each day at high school has tested positive for covid- school say the girl's close contacts have been told to self isolate but my son hasn't.

Does anyone know would constitute a 'close contact' in school setting would be? I've emailed the school incase they've made a mistake but interested if anyone knows?

At our school we contact anyone who sits within 2m of the child who has tested positive and are really strict with seating plans so this information is as accurate as possible. We would definitely include a student who sat next to them. Hope that helps.

Your son has been overlooked somehow. This would definitely count as close contact in my school. He needs to isolate.

At my school it would be anyone in their ‘bubble’.

He definitely should isolate.

I'm assuming this is Secondary where they don't have bubbles but they do have seating plans which have to be strictly adhered to so that track and trace can be done effectively

Thanks all - yes it's high school where they are in a whole (big!) yr group bubble but in different sets/ classes within that.

Sounds like he should have been sent home to isolate today then.

It’s not necessarily just that he sits hear her in some lessons, it also depends on when she started with symptoms and the last lesson he was with her in relation to that.

Local schools here is the whole year, or half year if you are lucky.
A yeargroup of 300 kids for 1 case - not all of those cases would have been in close contact or even any contact with the positive case. Plus some of these students are 16-17 so vaccinated.
Seems to be a unique situation compared to the rest of the country, and IMHO not constructive or scientific or humane or ethical

In my DS's school, out of a year group of 120, 26 pupils were identified as close contacts and sent home last time there was a positive case. Definitely including the children sitting next to them.
