Hi all, just a rant really.

We got Dd tested this morning. She has a continuous cough with a snotty nose. She's not ill but obviously it was the right thing to do. Hoping it's just a cold.

Because of this dp has to isolate at home until results ie not going to work which he's fine with.

He's called in to explain. He hasn't had a sick day in so long. He actually went years without a sick day up until last year when we had to isolate a couple times. He's had no sick time off in 2021 so far.

Anyway, his work are being assholes saying he needs to go in unless he has actually has symptoms himself. Being quite persuasive. Then they are questioning why we just didn't do a rapid test so he could go in if negative.

For one we don't have any. Both kids are young so don't need to be regularly tested, I'm a sahp and dp's work don't require them.

Also the main reason because you can't rely on rapid tests when you have symptoms and only should be used for those who are asymptomatic! This guidance is very clear that if you have symptoms to get a pcr test.

They are making him feel guilty for not going on. Dp's work attendance is generally 100 percent. In fact I'm always telling him to take some time off. As he's over worked and under appreciated.

To think no wonder we are in this mess if some work places are forcing staff to go in?!

It's not the first time they've messed up. A member of staff tested positive a while ago. They didn't tell any of the staff (he tested positive over the weekend) so they hid it and staff should have had to isolate but they didn't as they didn't know until after the 10 day mark. They weren't even encouraging masks. Or any extra measures.

Thankfully there's been no other cases directly linked to the business. But it's shameful regardless.

Yes, I hear of things like this all the time.
In my opinion this is a contributing factor in the high numbers experienced in the North west.
Lots of people working in jobs in which employers just want them in. Many low paid or self employed, no sick pay and can't afford to isolate both financially and at fear of risking their job.

Arrrrggghh · 21/06/2021 14:21

But he doesn’t have symptoms does he? It’s just your daughter? You can get a pack of lateral flow tests free from a pharmacy, could a friend or family member drop some at your door?

Pinotwoman82 · 21/06/2021 14:25

No he doesn’t have symptoms but the rules are that she needs to have have PCR test as she has symptoms and all the rest of the household needs to isolate until the results are in. Quite agree OP thus shit will never be over unless people follow simple rules

LazyHorizon · 21/06/2021 14:32

That’s terrible OP. What crap employees. You just know they’re strong-arming others in too and potentially bringing Delta into work as a result. Shortsighted and idiotic but there doesn’t seem to be any comeback for employers who act like that sadly.

LazyHorizon · 21/06/2021 14:32

Crap employERS that should say! Not the poor employees’ fault.

If his dd is getting a PCR test with symptoms then he needs to isolate until they get the results back. How do people not know this?
anewpost · 21/06/2021 14:58

Most people in RL are like this. I get called hysterical for testing for colds. ' there are other viruses you know ' people say.

It's not covid ! You did a LFT ..

Lots of people I know merrily going around with a cough and saying it's just a cold, but they've not tested on LTF or PCR. Somehow people ' just know ' when it's a cold. Frustrating as hell. And I'm constantly criticised testing myself / DC.

The early symptoms of the Delta variant are the same as a nasty cold - sore throat, headache, snotty nose. I had those symptoms for several days, and thought it was just a summer cold - until I lost my sense of smell, and tested positive. I ended up in hospital, because my oxygen saturation dropped below 90%, and NHS direct sent an ambulance.

I was in hospital from midnight on the Wednesday, on oxygen - and I was only discharged the following Monday, when I could maintain oxygen saturations in the mid 90s, on room air.

I was lucky - I had had my first jab (and was due the second on the day I tested positive), so I wasn’t really ill - but even so, three weeks on, I get breath,ds’s on even a small amount of exertion - walking down the hall to go to the loo, for example. I have to stop and sit down several times, during the process of having a shower, getting dressed and coming downstairs.

All of which is a long winded way of saying that the symptoms that @Kacha30‘s dd has need to be taken seriously, as they could be the Delta variant (though I really hope it is just a cold) - and her dh’s employers are idiots for wanting to risk having this more transmissible variant loose in their workplace!

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius scary isn't it. We've thankfully escaped the virus so far. DS had 3 tests last year but this year we've pretty healthy until now. This is a first test for Dd. She's usually very healthy. Still crossing my fingers it's a cold Dd has. Hope you're better now 💕

Thank you, @Kacha30 - I’m getting there. I feel OK, as long as I am sitting on the couch, doing nothing - so that is what I’m having to force myself to do - while Dh waits on me hand and foot. It’s awful. Wink

The lack of support to isolate has been one of the factors that has I think contributed to more cases, along with porous borders, lack of hotel quarantine, and of course Mr Johnson reacting far too slowly at every stage.

Lateral flow are for asymptomatic cases. They're also notoriously unreliable and the rules state that if some one in your house has symptoms then you self isolate until they have a negative pcr test.

I don’t massively blame businesses, they need to run. If your OH can WFH, then sure. But it’s shit for businesses relying on workers being physically in. You can see why people don’t isolate.
