Had first vaccine in April, got pregnant around Mid May - Second Vaccine? (AZ)

Looking for advice as I have no clue about the vaccine and pregnancy.

As the title says, I had the first vaccine (AstraZeneca) before falling pregnant and, having found out today, am wondering what to do about my second vaccine?

Is it safe for me to go ahead and have the second AZ now?

Get advice from your midwife or consultant. Lots of pregnant women have been referred in by the consultants at the start of the vaccination programme. We don't know your health and your best option is to get advice from a professional.

It’s absolutely fine to have the vaccine while pregnant. There will be a doctor at the centre where you go and one of the questions they ask you will be about pregnancy.

This exact thing happened to me today! First AZ dose in April, positive pregnancy test this morning then due to have my second AZ dose this evening.

Just wanted to let you know they took the decision out of my hands and said I couldn't have a second AZ before 12 weeks. I was at a mass vaccination centre and the senior nurse came to see me and was so helpful. Basically I now need to go through my GP and get a "patient referral" and possibly have Pfizer for my second dose instead. She said this is becoming more common.

Disappointed to miss out on being full vaccinated but was nice to not have to make the decision myself! Hope that helps xx

@NataliaSouthCoast, hi! Just found this post and saw that you may have been offered a Pfizer as a second dose after an initial AZ dose? What happened in the end? Did you manage to get the Pfizer?

NataliaSouthCoast · 22/07/2021 17:36

Hi! Apparently the guidance has changed now so I am booked in my for my second AZ next week when I'll be 9 weeks pregnant!x

@NataliaSouthCoast, ah I see! I did wonder as no professionals have let me know about being able to mix vaccines so I was interested to hear if some people were being offered that!
Nice one - I’m leaning towards getting the second dose of AZ as well. Stay safe and I hope your pregnancy is going smoothly 😊

That's good to know! Yes I've got to admit that mixing vaccines was new to me until they told me at the mass vaccination centre - my GP on the phone yesterday was pretty sure that the same is better? I guess there's so much changing all the time as we find out more!

Thank you, right back at you! Xxx

Check with your gp about the timing of when you have it but yes it is fine to have in pregnancy.

In fact it’s desirable because being pregnant is a huge risk factor if you catch covid - you are more likely to be sicker

I was in the same boat, I had my first vaccine in Feb, and 2 weeks later I found out I was pregnant. I was too scared to get the 2nd dose but with the rising of the delta variant 15 weeks after my first dose I got my 2nd dose when I was 16 weeks pregnant. I'm now 24 weeks and baby is doing well and I'm so grateful that I had the vaccine otherwise I think I would have been frightened to leave the house as covid cases in my area are the highest in the UK. It was a difficult decision to make at the time, especially as there were very few people I could find in a similar position but after speaking with family members who are doctors/nurses etc I was reassured that I was making the right decision.
