First jab in Wales, can I get second in England?

DC19 is a student at Cardiff Uni who had their first jab in Wales in May. Their second jab will be due over the summer when they'll be at home in England. They're registered with a Welsh GP.

Anyone know if it's it going to be possible to book their second jab in England rather than have to travel 200 miles back to Wales to get it done on time?

I’m sure it will be possible but technically awkward to book. But where I am in England there are pop up no-appointment vaccination clinics advertising what they have on offer on a particular day and saying you don’t even have to be registered with a gp to get one. Suspect they will become more widespread during the summer and this might be the easiest solution.

Failing that, get her to call her gp and ask what they suggest.

That's a good idea for a backup @Frazzled2207
I will keep my eye out for those

My DD is in same position

gov.wales/covid-19-vaccination-higher-education-students

If you read this it does say that if you have an NHS number you can book in England even though your GP is in Wales but I have been unable to do so!

NHS Booking website just says you need to speak to your GP but GP says speak to 119. They suggested registering as a temporary resident with an English GP. Not as straightforward as the link would suggest!

Good luck and please let me know if you are successful.

CardiffMom · 20/06/2021 12:21

@Walk20 - I suppose they will get the text when it's due anyway - so then they can try to book and see what locations they are offered.
Getting through to our English GP on the phone is a joke these days! I don't fancy having to register temporarily.
Failing that @Frazzled2207 's idea of a mass vaccination day somewhere is an idea.
Though to be honest I wouldn't mind driving them to Wales and having an overnight stay, if that's what it comes to.

@CardiffMom It doesn't work like that in Wales. We dont get a text or notification , or any choice at all actually! We just get an appointment letter. So your DC wont get a call. Obviously there are going to be 1000s of students in this position. Either approach a local GP practice or travel back to Wales.

Looking at the link @Walk20 shared, the "returning to England" says "if you're registered with a GP..." I think they mean..... in England. Wales registered patients do not have access to the booking system being used in England.

Weve nearly finished vaccinating in Wales so it wouldnt surprise me if there wasn't a mop up drop in towards the end of term for juat this sort of scenario.

Another option might be to speak with Welsh GP about concerns and get booked in early before returning home.

Oh yikes, she won't get a letter either as she's moving out of one house next week and not into another until September. There will surely be 1000s of students between rental contracts too? I'll have to get her to try and get in touch with her GP before she comes home.

Oh crikey. I'm in Scotland and it's all been done by letter here too. Except they let the 18-30 yr olds register for text appointments for the very reason that they move around so much.
I'd get her to ask the university what the plan is OP. As you say there be loads of students affected

Honeywort · 20/06/2021 23:12

We’re the opposite way round (live in Wales, dd at uni in England) so realise this might not help, but it was v straightforward to book her first jab here in Wales - I rang the local health board number to find out what she’d need to do when she came home (she came home this weekend but hadn’t had first jab). All they needed was her nhs number which I had to hand so they booked her in there and then for a jab this coming week.

She could update her address to her home English address? I think contacting local (England) health services is probably the way to go. Can be CCG if GP not helpful. Or by then there will probably be walk in vaccination slots.
BackforGood · 20/06/2021 23:31

There will have to be a system for this. It will affect lots of people.

I'll be interested to hear if anyone finds "the way" as my dd (no longer a student) is in the same position. She has had her first jab in Wales but tenancy on her flat is about to run out so she won't be there, and wouldn't get any letters, when the time comes for the 2nd one.

DunnerRunner · 20/06/2021 23:34

I'm the other easy around. I resident in Eales. Now due my 2nd jab. Received my appointment letter yesterday for 8 minutes past 12 in 1st July. Sadly I can't make it as I'm on a residential course in England for a new job.
Also sadly my 12 weeks are up on 3rd July so little leeway.
NHS England don't want to know. I've been told by 2 GP practices that registering as a temp resident won't get me vaccine access.
I can't book online.
The NHS Wales booking line opens tomorrow at 9pm. Sadly I start a 3 hour exam at 8.30 tomorrow morning!! I'll get 30 minutes maybe 45 for lunch. When I pre emptied this problem 3 weeks ago before I started this job, I phoned to book my 2nd jab and was told to Fuck Off, in politer terms and stop clogging the vaccine hotline and no I could no book my 3nd jab until called forward for it. I waited 50 minutes to get through, so I'm really up shit creek now!! I can only make a weekend appointment so my time limit being called so late is a major problem!!
Well done Wales for making this stressful and near impossible!

Frazzled2207 · 20/06/2021 23:37

There are going to be quite a lot of people in this scenario and vv

sandgrown · 20/06/2021 23:38

Could try visiting a local vaccination centre towards the end of the day . At our centre we always try to use up any extra Pfizer jabs where people failed to show up

Marcanana · 22/06/2021 08:47

The app I have which you use to show your vaccine status is England only I think(?). Can anyone confirm and does anyone also know if there a Welsh equivalent?
Your Dc may need to prove vaccine status at some point in the future and if they have jabs from two different countries it might not show up as "fully vaccinated" in either app.
They should speak to the GP for advice but I bet they'll spend as long on the phone trying to get a definitive answer and the easiest thing, if not the cheapest, might be a summer daytrip back to Uni town!

Lottie4 · 22/06/2021 09:07

It might be worth her phoning a surgery local to you and asking if she'll get her second vaccine here if she transfers to them. Very easy to transfer doctors, DD has had ongoing treatment and operations, and transfers back here if she knows she wants certain things done closer to home.

If not, she can get her post redirected.

Alternatively, she could travel back to get vaccination and catch up with friends who live nearer to uni than home. I know my DD would travel the 600+ back to uni as she's done this for treatment and really wants her vaccination.

Nootkah · 22/06/2021 09:20

@Marcanana No there isnt an equivalent APP. NHS Wales is a separate entity to NHS England (so is NHS Scotland). We're being told the four nations NHS services are working together for a solution. At the moment in Wales we can only demonstrate our vaccine status with a paoer certificate, which we have to apply for, and ia onky granted for urgent travel to destinations which require it (i.e. Not for holidays)

Randomgal28 · 10/08/2021 18:24

Did anybody get an answer on this? I’m in wales and had one jab here but now want to get my 2nd jab in England - 119 have told me I can just turn up for a walk in in England but I’m worried about the covid pass not recognising both jabs

Cookerhood · 10/08/2021 19:44

I have vaccinated several students from Wales at a walk clinic. When we put in their NHS number it knows it is their second, so it is on the same system, however it won't appear on the app. DS is going to wait until he goes back (his first appointment was by text, but he hasn't received anything for his second one).
