Covid positive Q - did you find out which variant you had?

I haven’t tested positive, I’m just curious with all the talk of variants.

If you’ve tested positive with a PCR test, have you ever found out which variant you had? Did someone get in touch to tell you?

I can’t imagine it happens in terms of the admin involved but a friend mentioned her friend had been told so got me thinking.

No - after my PCR test I just got a text telling me it was positive (plus a few follow-up calls from the NHS about how I was doing and making sure I was isolating). But that was back in February, before the Delta variant was a thing here.

Covid positive Q - did you find out which variant you had?
Adriftat46 · 19/06/2021 13:05

I didn’t think so, as I’ve only heard of people getting what you’ve had.

I’d be interested if I tested positive although now the odds are probably Delta anyway.

No, just the text as above. My symptoms though were the delta variant - runny nose, sore throat etc, no cough / temperature.

Fitforforty · 19/06/2021 19:35

Only a % of tests are checked to see which variant they are and I can’t imagine they would tell the person. The Delta variant is the most dominant at the moment so it’s most likely to be that one.

Lindy2 · 19/06/2021 19:41

No. It was just a positive result.

However, as it was in January 2021 and based upon the speed it wiped through DH's work place, I've always assumed it was the Kent variant.

ASchuylerSister · 19/06/2021 19:43

At my work we’ve had to do surge testing due to some of the positives being the Delta variant.

That’s staff and all members of their household.

summerfun12 · 19/06/2021 19:46

Yes as it turned out I had the South African variant and it wasnt common in my area
I'm not sure if they just plucked my test out of a hat to be variant tested though. Anyway it caused quite a fuss in January

Adriftat46 · 19/06/2021 21:13

Summerfun- that’s interesting, did you get told officially you had the SA variant?

ASchuylerSister - did you just know that some were Delta variants but not who specifically?

I’m only being curious really. I’m an information person and would definitely like to know what I had if I tested positive. Knowing someone somewhere knew but I didn’t would be infuriating! (id get over it obvs)

My work colleagues son caught covid and he had a call to say he had the Delta variant. He lives in Bolton though, so a surge area. Don't know if that makes any difference.

3 cases in our household, all called separately to be told it was delta variant. 2 cases called within a few days of testing positive, one called to be told 2 weeks later. Was not impressed that they were trying to find out where ds had been for the last week when he’d been isolating since before his test.
Also not impressed to find out that t&t do not correlate the info so had no idea of 2 other confirmed delta cases in the house already. Especially as we were all given as contacts of each other when required to disclose close contacts on testing positive. Didn’t seem the best use of a test and trace system, to not have a system able to track it given the amount of information they already had but didn’t seem to use ….

BiniorellaSun · 20/06/2021 02:27

DS and I had Covid in May and I’m trying to find out. We are in an enhanced surveillance study for PHE so we know they sequenced it but I can’t get the information. I have just submitted a subject access request to PHE in the hopes that will help.

All PCR positives are being genotypes for four variants (delta is one), and then being sequenced now
Losttheequipment · 20/06/2021 02:38

Genotyped (autocorrect, sorry)

whataballbag · 20/06/2021 08:54

A work colleague tested positive a few weeks back. He was told it was delta - nhs rang asking lots of questions including travel to India etc

mum2jakie · 20/06/2021 08:57

Yes, couple of weeks ago and we were called back and told it was Delta and asked about foreign travel etc. I had asked whether we would find out what variant it was on an earlier call but think we would be informed anyway.

Jaz12 · 20/06/2021 09:17

We’ve just had 3 positive cases in our household. We received a call confirming one of us had the delta variant, but nothing for the other two.

Adriftat46 · 20/06/2021 12:54

All very interesting thank you everyone for replying.

It does seem more common now to be told what variant you’ve got then.

OP posts:
ASchuylerSister · 20/06/2021 13:41

@Adriftat46 We we’re only told that some were the Delta variant. Not sure if the individuals were informed which variant they had.

trying29 · 20/06/2021 15:44

Yes we had an extra call from PHE telling us it was the delta variant post testing positive to ask us for our movements 14 days prior to the positive results

BarbarianMum · 20/06/2021 16:52

V interesting @summerfun12. Did they ring you to ask if youd been travelling? I got COVID at Christmas and assume it was the Kent variant because it was very "coldy", not like the original COVID which I had in March. Bit really I have no idea.
