Dd high temperature

Dd, 10, woke up at midnight with a temp of 38.5. Did a lateral flow and it's negative. As it's a Covid symptom, do we need to do a PCR before any of us can go anywhere? She is a lot cooler this morning but still warm.

Yes

OrangeSharked · 19/06/2021 09:29

I really don't understand why over a year in we are still asking if someone with a high temperature needs a pcr test.

HermioneGrunger · 19/06/2021 09:30

LFT for no symptoms, PCR for symptoms. Your DD has symptoms...

16 months in no one should still be asking this question.

HazeyJaneII · 19/06/2021 09:35

Yes, PCR.
Hope she is ok.

PandemicPalava · 19/06/2021 10:04

Temp back down to 36.5 this morning. Appointment booked for 10:30. She still feels hot and is a bit snotty.

Lovely friendly comments on here! Apologies for needing clarification, I was in a panic. It's just so bloody stressful shutting down the lives of everyone you've seen for the last 2 days which is about 60 families so wanted to make sure I was doing it right

Yes. Any covid symptoms need a PCR test. Lateral flow has a high false negative rate which is why its only used for symptomless testing. PCR testing has a very low false negative which is why it is used where a symptom indicates there may be an infection. Hope you get your results back soon .

You dont shut down the lives of everyone you have seen until you get a positive PCR test.

Right now you get a test and shut down your family until the results

BeastforLease · 19/06/2021 13:21

We are not "16 months" in to this - 16 months ago the only tests available were for those who were in intensive care for more than 24 hours. The pandemic started 16 months ago but self testing and community testing did not - the guidance on both has changed several times since they started too.

People can be so vile - LFTs have only been available at home for a couple of months. Fair play and hats off to the OP for asking and clarifying what was the correct thing to do.

OrangeSharked · 19/06/2021 13:27

You don't need to shut down the lives of everyone you've seen

You just need to test. Honestly I really don't understand why you thought you wouldn't need to test when in bloody march last year it was test if you've had a temp or a cough. Its not changed

You test, if its positive then you need to look at the people you've had close contact. 60 families is an awful lot to have had close contact with. If its a school situation the school will decide who needs to isolate not you

BeastforLease · 19/06/2021 13:46

@OrangeSharked The OP has done a LFT - she is very clearly asking if she needs to do a PCR test as well as she wasn't sure.

60 families is two school classes of thirty children - one the child, and one sibling - certainly not an unusual situation for a parent to be in.

JanuaryEl5ieBill · 19/06/2021 13:51

Nobody except those within your household need to isolate unless the results come back positive from the pcr test

Heathrug · 19/06/2021 13:52

Our lateral flow test didn’t turn positive for a day or two after our positive PCR

PandemicPalava · 19/06/2021 14:08

@BeastforLease thank you. I know really what I needed to do, I just get into a panic.

@OrangeSharked it would be the whole class as we are in class bubbles, so 30, and 30 at dance as she is in a squad class, plus Brownies who had an indoor session on Friday. I was just in a tizzy with a very hot child so wasn't thinking straight. I know I need to

Not while you test. The bubble would shut if the PCR is positive.

PandemicPalava · 19/06/2021 14:15

I think I was just confused as it was only a high temp with nothing else and I felt like I was catastrophising. None of us ever get ill so this is the first time I've had to deal with it during the pandemic. Sounds stupid I know.

Looking at it now I clearly needed to PCR test as well as LF, which has now been done. Dd is fine, we've ordered pizza and she is happy. Temp under control with paracetamol, various clubs notified of imminent results, dog walking organised, online shop due so we will not be going anywhere.

OP posts:
PandemicPalava · 19/06/2021 14:16

@PracticingPerson yes I know, I didn't mean to phrase it like that, looking at what I typed now I was clearly babbling

Please don’t apologise for asking advice. We all know what to do, but it’s different when you actually need to as it’s all very frightening. You’ve done the right thing in getting your daughter tested. We all panic when it comes to our children. Hope the test comes back negative.

PandemicPalava · 19/06/2021 14:19

@Mindymomo thank you! I am so up on the rules and testing and feel like an idiot as I know full well what is needed but just was in a flap. Dd hated the test and was so upset with the LF but did well at the test centre. Everything is in place as should be

OP posts:
PracticingPerson · 19/06/2021 14:39

Fingers crossed it is negative - almost all are so the odds are in your favour!

PandemicPalava · 19/06/2021 15:06

@PracticingPerson thank you, fingers crossed

My next issue is entertaining my lurcher tomorrow! I have people who can walk him but not until Monday... scent work all day I think!

Phew it was negative! Very very impressed with the setup of the testing site and turnaround

Good result and the virtuous glow of following the rules too Halo Grin

Mindymomo · 20/06/2021 09:51

Good news for your family and the dog. We have a Border Collie, whose whole life is walks.
