Can I travel to the US for a funeral?

TenCornMaidens · 18/06/2021 10:42

I am not sure how to find out the factual information specific to this issue.

My father lives in the US and is dying. I live in England. I am not sure whether I am allowed to travel to the US for a funeral of a close family member? What would the restrictions be and would I have to quarantine when I get back? I have had both doses of the vaccine but there isn't a policy about that yet.

For context, I am not completely utterly desperate to go. Under normal circumstances I probably would. But I need to know the facts before I decide. If anyone can point me to the right source I'd be so grateful.
Thanks.

Sorry for your loss. You can go but would need to follow amber testing restrictions (day 2/8 and day 5 test release if you wanted to end quarantine early) on your return.

I'm not sure the US is allowing people from the UK in though?

I think I wouldn't be allowed in, honestly. And if I was I would have to quarantine for 7 days.

I’m sorry to hear about your father. It’s difficult to give advice here without knowing your citizenship.

TenCornMaidens · 18/06/2021 11:05

Sorry, I am a British Citizen.

I think I'm not allowed in.

The proclamation doesn't give wiggle room for exceptional circumstances.

Can you check with the Embassy?

Call or look up their website.

TenCornMaidens · 18/06/2021 11:07

Do you mean the US Embassy in London?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 18/06/2021 11:09

Yes.

Won’t hurt.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/06/2021 11:09

Can you contact the US embassy to see if there are compassionate grounds but they're just not publishing them? I'm so sorry about your Father Flowers

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/06/2021 11:09

X post

Also, my father is not a US citizen, although his wife (not my mother) is.

Okay, thanks.

I could be wrong, but I thought the January proclamation didn't apply if you were the child of a US citizen or lawful permanent resident. This has some up to date information on: travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/visa-information-resources/covid-19-travel-restrictions-and-exceptions.html

We are British citizens and US lawful permanent residents and have been able to travel freely between the US and UK since the pandemic began.

TenCornMaidens · 18/06/2021 11:18

Thanks. I think that means minors though?

The US Embassy in London clarified it means minors.

I'm sorry, there are so many other loopholes, I am hard pressed to think that yours wouldn't be top of the list. We even had staff travel back from India last week.

I hope you find a way around it

TenCornMaidens · 18/06/2021 11:32

Not totally sure I want to find a way around it (for many many reasons) but will have a word with the embassy when they open again next week.

Might sound daft but you can spend two weeks in Mexico then you can enter on an ESTA. I appreciate you might not have the time though.

Hope you manage to get there. Maybe you could ask on this reddit board, I always read it for US border updates.

It’s really shitty and I really feel for you. What makes me even crosser is that Biden and God knows how many people flew here, had a bbq, tea with the queen and then went home.

Could you contact your local mp? Aren’t they supposed to help people with issues like this?

I really hope you can find a way x

CousinKrispy · 18/06/2021 12:51

Thank you for sharing that very useful reddit board!

TenCornMaidens · 18/06/2021 13:32

Thanks so much everyone. This has been very very helpful and clarifying but I will also contact the embassy if I think I want to try to go.
