Schools, close contact and isolation

Can I just check I’m not going mad please?

DD has been sent home as close contact. We’re expecting her to isolate for 10 days.

I’ve already had a few comments saying, aren’t you just going to test her and send her back? (And people telling me that’s what they’ve been doing for their DC for school/activities etc)

I’ve admittedly taken my eye off the rules recently, but can you LFT your way out of isolation these days? Much as I’m sad for DD that she’s stuck at home, given rate of spread in school, isolation absolutely feels like the right thing to do

I don't think you can.
We live in an area where all close contacts are being asked to test even if you don't have any symptoms. We've been told that even if the test comes back negative you have to still isolate.

4PawsGood · 17/06/2021 10:53

You’re right. You could become positive at any point in the ten days so what’s why it’s a ten day isolation.

They are testing the LFT method for this, but so far only if you are Terribly Important (see Michael Gove).

Your dd will have to isolate for 10 days, even if her own test comes back negative. She may be brewing the virus.

If she is a close contact of someone who has had a positive lft, she can stop isolating if their PCR test comes back negative.

Your friends should not be sending their kids to clubs/ schools if they’re a close contact, even if they themselves have negative tests.

Thanks both.

There’s such confusing messaging around all of this (especially the VIPs Hmm, and the travel rules (HmmHmm) that I get why people maybe think testing is an alternative, but it’s a bit scary

Bloody Covid.

(Just to clarify, DD will absolutely be isolating for the 10 days, but it’s good to know I’m not being a fusspot)

I find that very difficult to believe. If schools have identified you as a close contact, you get an official letter, code on the register and get told when you can return. You can’t just send them back.

ladybirdpoppy · 17/06/2021 21:27

My DS is isolating due to be identified as being in close contact with a positive case.

CooDeGrass · 17/06/2021 21:29

Agreed @Howshouldibehave - this is our seventh isolation stint since Sep last year (not all the same child) and guidance has always been very clear for school at least.

We received an official email from school with a return date. It also advised not to go out and mix with friends until after the 10 days. Everyone in our house are testing LFT twice a week and I have to report DS to school. School set work via the app for pupils isolating.
