Job vs Vaccine

  • Name change for this

I work in a care home and it’s now mandatory for me to be fully vaccinated against Covid.

I had my first vaccine beginning of March, I had AZ.

I’m early thirties, no risk factors and I had Covid in May 2020 (thankfully symptoms on a week off so didn’t pass to anyone at work)

I made the decision that I won’t be having my second AZ vaccine, as for myself, I don’t find that the benefits out weigh the risks.

I’m now in a position where I HAVE to have the vaccine or I could face losing my job!

I’m absolutely furious about it.
I took the vaccine to protect others, not myself, but given that the vaccine has a very serious risk attached to it (which hadn’t come to light when I had my first dose) I no longer want to take it for the benefit of other people.

Why should I be forced to have a vaccine that Isn’t deemed safe for my age group, for the purpose of protecting the vulnerable?
Why am I being asked to potentially put myself at risk to look after someone else.
Is my life not as important?

I want to protect the vulnerable, I really do, and so I’ve asked for Pfizer / moderna as an alternative but have been refused.

Why is vaccine mixing approved in other countries, but not the UK!
If I lived in France I would now be classed as fully vaccinated (1 dose following Covid infection)

It just doesn’t seem fair at all :(

Well for a start the ingredients of the vaccines are pretty easy to find out.
Not knowing what will happen in the next 5 years is also not a good reason not to have the vaccine

ClaudiaWankleman · 17/06/2021 16:33

When the medical professionals don't know anything about the ingredients of the vaccines

This isn't true. They are freely available online and on the vaccine information leaflet. You can google and read about the reason for their inclusion, their properties and the amount included. You can look up studies as to their effectiveness and assuage any doubts you have.

The vaccine as a whole may be relatively new but the techniques and ingredients have been in development and deployment for years.

If a care worker dies as a result of vaccine injury will their families receive the in service death benefit- these are the questions that need to be answered
Why would they not receive it? There’s no question mark here.

I wonder what these care homes will do for staff if people then leave their jobs, especially with Brexit.

They’re screwed. It’s hard work for crap pay. They struggle to recruit already without this.

Will they accept proof of antibodies as an alternative?

osbertthesyrianhamster · 17/06/2021 17:14

Indeed, Purple.

I doubt it as no one knows how long antibodies from infection last.

I've just done an antibody test. You need to fill a little tube with blood. It's very fiddly to do. Frankly a vaccination is an awful lot easier than regular antibody tests!

I have also asked whether the virus has mutated out of the vaccines and I have been informed that it has happened all over the world hence the different variants
What does this mean? Most variants have arisen in areas that have not yet vaccinated (Kent originally, S.A, Brazil etc). Viruses mutate all the time. Vaccines may force them to mutate but that's not what the world is dealing with at the moment.
And there is no evidence to suggest any effect on fertility, that's just scaremongering from anti vaxxers.

JustABloodyMinute · 19/06/2021 14:14

Like others have pointed out we all take far bigger risks every day. Realistically this one is miniscule in comparison. While I don't think you can force people to take a vaccine, I have a parent in a care home so I'm keen to see anyone working there (and visiting) to get themselves vaccinated. The government, awful as it is, has a duty of care to those that may not be able to speak for themselves.

@Lindy2 no one knows how long antibodies after vaccination last yet - and a percentage of people aren’t immune after vaccination. There are several studies now showing that, for the majority of people, antibodies after infection persist for 8+ months.
