So what is going to be put in place to protect us from another variant drama washing up on our shores like the recent one, how are they are going to protect us and most importantly the vaccines that work very well on these variants. What if we end with a new variant in the future that might evade our vaccines partially or fully?
How are they protecting our borders and are they fast tracking helping the less able countries of getting vaccinated? As long as the virus is heavily circulating in the world, a variant will end up with it here. I heard the G7 is giving so many covid vaccines away to help out, how fast are they going to implement this?

Good question. Looks like the government either don't have a plan or don't wish to share the plan with us...

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 15/06/2021 16:20

I'm sure they will let us know when they have downed 6 pints of lager and scribbled a plan on the back of a fag packet. Oh wait... They won't even manage that much.

User135644 · 15/06/2021 16:22

It won't be much of an issue as long as the vaccines work well against it. The issue at the moment is there's tens of millions of adults who haven't had either 1 or 2 does.

VaccineSticker · 15/06/2021 16:40

@User135644 how can anyone guess if in the future our vaccines will be effective against future variants of concern?

And why wait until we find that we are in the corner again because we have a nasty variant that’s circulating and we have not got enough tools to fight it off properly. How about being proactive and make sure the drama of the delta variant won’t happen again because it certainly won’t be the last time.

It would be unlikely a new variant would completely escape the vaccines anytime soon so as long as enough of us are fully vaccinated, we should be quite well protected both as individuals and as a society as high levels of vaccination will mean the virus is not spreading as much (vaccines reduce transmission).

This is why there is a plan for booster vaccinations at least for the vulnerable groups though and this is what happens with the annual flu jab anyway, so should be manageable.

This is the governments preferred plan but what about preparing for other eventualities? Or is that too proactive Grin

Being proactive how? They could I suppose donate more vaccines, invest more in vaccine production. Work on an autumn booster programme (which it looks like they’re already doing, to be fair), get orders for mRNA vaccines sorted in advance as it looks like(?) they’re easier to tweak for new variants (UK government have done this with CureVac although it hasn’t been licensed yet). Continue work on treatments.

Thewiseoneincognito · 15/06/2021 17:14

I hope any plan includes a massive investment into the NHS to increase our capacity and staff levels.

The boosters need to be done as soon as they’re ready because our most vulnerable may have diminished protection going into the autumn which could be very dangerous if we are lifting restrictions.

The message to the public needs to be consistent and clear going forward. The government need to be proactive and not reactive, it’s been their downfall from day 1.

RuggerHug · 15/06/2021 17:18

This is exactly why the hysterics about a few more weeks is nothing. Until everyone is vaccinated this will be around. It took 10 years to vaccinate the world from smallpox. These days it can and will be done quicker but there isn't a magic button. Requires co-operation, sense and logic in all countries to work. Closing borders is a cast, not a plaster. It still has to come off at some point. Worldwide vaccination is what's needed and what is being worked on.

The only plan that matters to the clowns in government is being in government and enriching their mates. So why would they have a plan for when the next variant arrives.
alardi · 15/06/2021 17:25

"close the borders!" no doubt is slogan of loudest critics

= those who conveniently forget UK has a land border that must remain open according to international law

What you mean when Boris and his mates said they would take back control of our borders, they weren't telling the truth? I am shocked.

Probably best you email your MP OP, difficult to guess the answers to your questions.
