Do people get covid twice?

Hi,

I wondered if anyone is following the data on whether people can catch covid twice, or if they can catch Delta covid, having had first wave covid back in March last year?

I just wondered because I caught covid last March and am still really struggling with long covid symptoms. I then had my vaccine 7 weeks ago and have been really unwell with side effects every since then. I'm now terribly thin and tired and just desperate for a bit of time off to recuperate.

I know they want us all to rush forward to get the second vaccine but I'm trying to calculate the risk/benefit balance in my own situation. I'm trying to figure out if I could justify waiting a bit for the second vaccine until I can gain a bit of weight again, and feel a bit more human.

The flip side is that it might make sense to have the vaccine asap and destroy myself sooner, so as to have a chance to be recovered because DS is off on holiday. At the moment, the thought of trying to summon up the energy to get him some fun, seems like climbing Everest though, even without vaccine 2.

Thanks!

That's really good that one jab + long covid is likely to get us good protection. Very good news.

I'm sorry to hear that you had a tough time, but it's nice to know that it's acceptable to wait until well to have the second jab. I would really like that, as I'm just zonked right out at the moment.

That's amazing to think of people having it up to four times. What a thought!

Hi Peacelillyhippy ,

That's strange isn't it? Oh well. I wonder how we're meant to know if we have it twice in quick succession then. Mysterious!

Also twice. Never felt so Ill in all my almost 50 years the first time around, very much milder the second time. (March '20/jan '21)
Thankfully no lasting symptoms, I'm chronically tired anyway as a result of working almost permanently nights!

FrankiesKnuckle · 16/06/2021 22:42

Also fully vaccinated now.

I had distinctive symptoms (fatigue, loss of taste and smell, lower back ache) in March 2020, positive for antibodies September 2020, again positive for antibodies June 2021. The text says it's likely I've had it in the last six months, though I've had no symptoms. That would mean I've had it at least twice.

Yes.
You can get it more than twice

My great uncle was thought to have have had it twice, but they had no tests in his care home in the first wave.

I believe PHE say that 0.4% of people who've had covid have had it twice. (But again I don't know how the impossibility of getting a test in the first wave has been taken into account.

My FIL had an awful time with Covid in Oct 2020. He tested positive for Covid again in February this year. His first vaccination floored him for a week but the second one only caused a sore arm. My MIL who spent all her time looking after him was never ill and was grand with both vaccinations.

jsp5642 · 18/06/2021 17:25

I just got my invitation for my second vaccination and I haven't really started eating properly since the last one (still on only potatoes and broccoli and it's 7 weeks). 2lbs above the minimum weight for my hight, and more than a stone below my pre-covid weight. Dilemma.

We quite close to Bedford and the leading wave of the Delta variant is just arriving in my neighbourhood. (35 per 100,000 cases in my immediate locality.)

I wish I knew if I'd get the "just a sore arm" option this time.

Oh, they have no appointments. Phew. Time to think about it.

My dad had it twice (tested both times as hospitalised, so no doubt). My second dose of the vaccine was not as bad as the first tbh.

jsp5642 · 18/06/2021 18:46

userlotsanumbers thanks that's good to know. Not so bad as the first is definitely what I would like. I hope your Dad is okay now.

Hi jsp . Also had covid twice. Felt awful after first jab for several weeks like you. Was absolutely dreading the second jab. But joy of joys! I had not reaction at all second time around. Had Astra Zenica. Not even sore arm. Maybe a bit tired for a few days but was just so relieved. I feel for you as I have M.E . Please take care and try not to worry.

jsp5642 · 19/06/2021 06:12

HI Sonata13,

Thank you that's really encouraging. I've been thinking about it and I think I just need to get on and do it asap. If I do that then if it is bad then I can recover while DS is still at school. If I put it off in hope of recovering from jab 1 then the recovery from jab 2 will eat into the summer holiday or possibly is start to secondary school, and that would be much worse. So I think I'm just going to grit my teeth and get on with it.
