What does this mean for schools?

Trying to get my head around what the delay to reopening means for the activities that usually go ahead at the end of the summer term.
Will parents be able to attend sports days? End of term productions? Will transition days go ahead?

My DC's transition day to secondary school has already taken place online - sensible I think, rather than having kids from lots of different primary schools all mixing together.

Sports day is happening with no parents.

No normal end of year production planned (as that would mean mixing class bubbles) but each class is doing a smaller thing. Parents were going to be invited, but I guess maybe they won't be now. Maybe they'll record it instead.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/06/2021 19:27

We're having a transition summer school too from y6-7. Seems sensible if you can staff it.

Chillychangchoo · 14/06/2021 19:28

No transitory day for my year 6 but a week long summer school in the last week of August.

Chillychangchoo · 14/06/2021 19:28

Sorry transition

pennylane83 · 14/06/2021 19:38

But they'll all be from different schools so they mix bubbles and primaries

Yet its been perfectly acceptable for months now for children to have been mixing bubbles (and to continue to do so) with various other schools at the numerous activities children attend outside of school!

Perhaps. But we're responsible for what happens on our site.

LadyPenelope68 · 14/06/2021 19:48

High School transition visits all cancelled, now being done via Zoom.
Sports Day - no parents, children will just do the activities in their bubbles.
Leavers Assembly - not happening, just extra activities booked for the children in school.

stuckinarutatwork · 14/06/2021 19:50

@ClarisseMcClellan

Why would transition days not go ahead? Do you live somewhere that the schools are closed?

All. Others things are no change to what we can do now

Ours have said no as it means mixing bubbles of children from different feeder schools (big secondary - at least 12 major feeder primaries plus goodness knows how many more schools that send 1 or 2 pupils).
Helloandhelloagain · 14/06/2021 19:50

My sons sports clubs are cancelled and transition days . So frustrating

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/06/2021 19:50

No, no and no for us. Glad about sports day. Only about 10 children genuinely enjoy it, and parents are judgy arses about things.

GiantToadstool · 14/06/2021 19:56

Our primary is having sports day but encouraging family bubbles and just a year at a time.

Yr6 residential happening in a week.

Meet new teacher is happening too...

GiantToadstool · 14/06/2021 19:57

I dont know if secondady is having a sports day. Certain not with parents. Been a yr7 with not a lot on but a good way to settle in.

Cattitudes · 14/06/2021 20:01

Glad about sports day.

Yes, silver linings! It is just a bit frustrating when rates are really low here if the first time they attend their new school is in September having never been inside and potentially knowing no one, while 30 people can meet up outside without difficulty.

MichonnesBBF · 14/06/2021 20:02

My school have already announced it will not be having, sports day, end of year productions or allowing transitions into their other class, however their new teachers will be going into their now classes and will have introductions and activities every Friday afternoon for 30 mins from now until the end of term (not counting the last Friday)
Early years are having zoom meetings, video of class walk around and will be using class dojo to read stories, film other activities from the staff (much like remote learning)
This has I think been accepted by staff, parents and children quite well (well the ones I have spoken to anyway.)

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/06/2021 20:02

the numerous activities children attend outside of school

Clue there. Schools have to contract trace.. with all the spare time we have.

MichonnesBBF · 14/06/2021 20:03

I should clarify, the teachers going into meet their new class will be more than 2 meters apart and the children will remain in their chairs.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/06/2021 20:05

We're doing new teacher stuff on the last but one day of term. Teachers with masks and 2m distance so won't have to isolate if that bubble goes down in the first week of the holidays. If a bubble goes, it won't lose any learning time for children either. 'Just' holidays. But we know everyone will it ore that.

FlatToppedTree · 14/06/2021 20:22

Does anyone know what's generally happening with new starters into Reception class?

BunsyGirl · 14/06/2021 20:23

There really needs to be an exemption for year 6 transition to year 7. Sports days, leavers assemblies, proms etc are one thing but not having the opportunity to see your new school is a completely different thing altogether.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/06/2021 20:24

Plenty of y7s managed it this year just fine.

FrownedUpon · 14/06/2021 20:24

No transition days here.

BunsyGirl · 14/06/2021 20:28

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation Not the same as that year had more opportunities to view schools prior to lockdown 1.

neveradullmoment99 · 14/06/2021 20:40

No sportsday where parents are invited.
Limited leavers celebrations in school. No face to face stuff with other bubbles.
Limited transitions.
No school trips,
No residentials.
I'm not disagreeing.
That's what it has been like here in Scotland.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/06/2021 20:43

@BunsyGirl They had one chance at open evening which mostly was attended by parents.

They really will be fine. They're all in the same situation. Any who need a 1:1 tour are allowed. The rest have their first day as just year 7 in school and it's grand.

EekThreek · 14/06/2021 20:46

School guidance hasn't changed with the easing of other restrictions, so we won't see DD1's last sports day, leavers assembly or leaver's dinner.

She was meant to be having her induction day tomorrow, but DC3 was sent home from nursery today with a cough and temperature, so she can't go anymore unless the test result comes back negative overnight. She's gutted, obviously, but it is what it is.
