Had enough of isolating

I just can't keep doing this. All my kids get coughs when they get colds. My son was binged up with a cold and sure enough today the coughing started. This is the 5th time. 5th time of 3 kids off school while I wait for a test that I know will be negative. 5th time that I have let clients down and this one will cost me about £500. Will it cost my my whole contract? Possibly. I can't just move my work by a day - I have to get someone else to cover me and they get paid unseat of me. I can't fucking afford this on top of having to shut my business for months on end with no support. I could just cry.

@inmyslippers

If you know it's a cough why are you isolating? I don't know anyone with kids still isolating when they get a cough
Don’t nurseries/schools send them home anyway though? My DD’s nursery would send her home if she had a noticeable persistent cough - they wouldn’t for cold symptoms without a cough or temp though eg runny nose/sneezing.
PixieDust28 · 13/06/2021 22:36

Round here they cannot go if they have a cough. You have to do a PCR test and have a negative result.

noscoobydoodle · 13/06/2021 22:39

We are on what seems like our billionth isolation. This time it's 10 days for the youngest for close contact but in the meantime he has had a test and so has DD2 both with tonsilitis and it looks like DD1 is coming down with another cold which will mean a temperature and another test/isolstion. Luckily PCR tests seem to be returned under 24hrs every time now here which is great but it isn't half disruptive and I expect my goodwill with my employer must be wearing out as I reschedule another day of meetings. However, I will continue to do the right thing for as long as required. At school and nursery a lot of staff are young and won't have had jabs yet, there will be children who are vulnerable and not jabbed, so I wouldn't take the risk.

^^ mine has hay fever and has been very snotty, coughing colds ect like most preschoolers. But not been sent home yet thankfully.

Of course venting is ok, and I'm sure the majority are doing the right thing, however hard it is. It's the handful of posters who come on and say,

I don't know anyone with kids still isolating when they get a cough

Most people I know aren’t doing it for kids.

I test my kids but we don’t isolate pending results

if she's ok in the morning, she's going to school. I'm not testing/isolating for a cold.

There are heaps of kids with coughs and colds in our school. I don’t know anyone who is bothering anymore and the school certainly aren’t sending home.

Maybe I won’t bother actually self isolating anymore after reading this thread.

I’m a teacher and have had loads of kids in with coughs and colds.

inmyslippers · 13/06/2021 22:47

In real life I don't know anyone with similar age kids keeping them off or isolating for a cough 🤷🏾‍♀️ people have had enough

HazeyJaneII · 13/06/2021 22:48

Just to add to previous post....

In real life I don't know anyone with similar age kids keeping them off or isolating for a cough 🤷🏾‍♀️ people have had enough

Maybe it's more than handful.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 13/06/2021 22:51

@HazeyJaneII

Threads like these give me the wiggins. Da shielded for a whole year, medically vulnerable with complex needs, but now back at school and unable to get a vaccine. The only hope we have is that people do the right thing, reading that so many people don't do the right thing, is frankly terrifying.
Theres doing the right thing for society and doing the right thing for your family, its not always the same thing or an easy decision to make. The loss of income from multiple isolations can have a devastating impact on a family. If my family had to isolate both me and DH wouldn't get paid (he's SE I'm temp agency) we have a little bit put aside in case this does happen, but if it were to happen regularly, even just the odd couple of days waiting for a negative result that could have a massive repercussions for us, its not always as cut and dry as it seems.
Bopahula · 13/06/2021 22:57

Without being goady HazelJanell, what do you want me to do? It's a cold, she's in bed next to me with a snotty nose and infrequent cough, but sneezing loads. If she's ok in the morning in herself I will send her to school.
Colds/bugs etc are part of childhood. I can't keep her off everytime she sniffles. If she's ill (temperature/ill) then I'll keep her home/make arrangements.

Carycy · 13/06/2021 23:02

The average person gets three colds a year. If you are a family with 3 three kids that’s 15 colds you have to deal with. 15 potential periods of isolation. Just not sustainable. It is
Getting beyond a joke. We cannot keep doing this.

Sweettea1 · 13/06/2021 23:04

I do LFT test on my dc if have a cold school are happy with that result.

ironclad · 13/06/2021 23:20

I'll admit we went for a walk when awaiting a PCR result for DS, he was fine by then and we were outside.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 14/06/2021 09:37

I live in an area where civics really really low and our primary and secondary have had no bubble issues or dc with it so far .......

However like op I can't leave my work load for 10 days, someone else would have to take it on meaning I would lose a ton of money again after being out of business for nearly 8 months of the year Shock

My reserves and emergency savings have completely ran out due to some big things going wrong in lockdown and am desperately trying to get some more back into the savings acc to build it back up.

We are currently living pay heck to pay check which frightens me so if we had to isolate we would be in dire straits.

It's not good and really feel for everyone in the same situation.

Unless of course your my in laws and they'll happily tel you nothings changed for them except they've saved loads as not out for coffee and lunches daily Hmm

HazeyJaneII · 14/06/2021 09:40

@Bopahula
You said she had a chesty cough, so I would have thought test.

I hope she is feeling better this morning.

Brokenrecord3006 · 14/06/2021 10:05

If you know it's due to a cold, why isolate? My DS has had a cough for a month now following a cold, childcare is satisfied that it's not covid and the doctor has been happy to see him with no mention of testing. Can you ask the school to be more understanding?

ineedaholidaynow · 14/06/2021 10:16

@Brokenrecord3006 the Delta variant can firstly present like a cold

NerdyBird · 14/06/2021 10:28

My dd's year group was sent home and we've been advised to do pcr halfway through isolation even if no symptoms. Something to do with delta variant. Can't break iso even if negative. It's our first iso period and it's hard enough, can't imagine doing it multiple times.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 14/06/2021 10:31

My perfectly healthy 3 year old is now isolating again due to being a contact of a positive case. I’m once again, trying to work while looking after her, at the worst possible timing for me work wise. It’s a fucking shit show.

If she was a cabinet minister obviously she’d be able to dodge of all of this by taking a daily test but the lives of us plebs who aren’t Michael Gove don’t matter so here we are.

There has got to be a better way.

SwanShaped · 14/06/2021 10:56

I agree it’s an absolute nightmare for anyone who can’t just take time off work. And I also agree that it must be very worrying for people who have vulnerable children. Children have an average of 8-10 colds a year. I think that’s why a lot of people don’t seem to be testing kids much. There’s so much coughing going on in school and nursery.

Totally agree. As school staff with a DH who is also school staff and children in different schools I've lost count of the isolation periods we have done. Children and school/nursery staff as experiencing constant stress and fear of isolation.
ThornAmongstRoses · 14/06/2021 17:19

I have two son’s, one who goes to school and the other goes to a childminder.

Both the school and childminder are happy to accept our sons if they have a cough as long as they are well in themselves - I.e no fever or other sign of illness and if they’ve had a negative LFT within the last 24-48 hours.

Gingenius · 14/06/2021 17:58

Bit jealous of people who are saying their schools/ childcare will accept lateral flow. It’s only PCR for us 😩 not so bad now but at one point it was taking 5 days to get a result - we were on knees work wise. I wonder if ‘accepting Lateral flow tests’ would be a good reason to move schools😂

musicalfrog · 14/06/2021 20:43

So that's everyone then. Either your work place gets irritated with you, or you lose money.

TuvoknotSpock · 14/06/2021 22:34

My nursery has a rule that's 12 coughs per hour = test / less than that no test.
Both of mine had a bad cough and cold a couple of weeks ago. I had a negative covid result for them but forgot to send it to the nursery, nursery didn't mention it at all, at pick up I just told them all clear and they were ok with that.

kindlekeeper · 14/06/2021 22:41

Don’t test and don’t declare. It’s nuts. The more you test the more is found. My friend is public Heath England and has both kids at School throughout despite both parents at home and live in au pair. It’s scandalous. I can barely speak to her as mine suffer.
