Drip feeding or pure speculation?

So with all the reports in the media about the potential delay to the easing of restrictions, do you think we are purposely being drip fed or is it simply the media stirring things? Only looking back to when we went into lockdown/had restrictions imposed the media more or less got it spot on and started to leak information about a week before BJ did his announcement. Don’t get me wrong I’m really hoping that this time the media are wrong but I just have a feeling.

There's not much else to report on, so I always think that the stories are fillers. My FB feed made me laugh the other day. Story 1: June 21st likely to be delayed.
Story 2: Michael Give would bet on the restrictions being lifted on 21st June.

They were one after the other!

DirectionsForUse · 09/06/2021 06:37

I think there'll be a delay but only a very short one with young people being vaccinated.

I think travel restrictions could continue though.

Lochelant · 09/06/2021 06:38

Yes I noticed last week that there were a lot of posts like that contradicting each other. However the last couple of days I’ve noticed more and more the media are reporting the same thing stating it’s a real possibility that restrictions won’t be eased. Ah I don’t know. On a selfish note I just want to know if I can go to my friends wedding at the egging of July but I know her there are more important things and that businesses really need restrictions to be eased asap.

I think a lot of it is to encourage vaccination among the reluctant and to make sure People don't get complacent as have their second vaccine

LittleRen · 09/06/2021 06:46

More often than not it turns out to be true less a few facts. It was also in the times so is not just the tabloids.

It makes sense - an extra two weeks gives the over 50s time to have their second jab and for it to kick in, and it’s also closer to schools finishing for summer.

I think it's very likely true - this government likes to test ideas on the general public first, to make sure they're popular.

Doubtless it will be too little, too late.

Yes, I agree. They have to wait until public onboard. However, that is going to cost us time...so means more restrictions than if we had done something weeks ago as the scientists from SAGE requested.

I work in (local) TV news and you're right, there really isn't a lot around at the moment.

I was on the planning desk on Friday and seriously thought about a 'its one week to decision day' type of story for Monday as there was just nothing to point a camera at.

We didn't go down that route as it was a bit nothingy but yes, sometimes we struggle to fill the programme with proper news!!

Looking at what is happening in some areas of the country, doesn't it seem obvious that it might take longer for all restrictions to be lifted, regardless of any drip feeding or media reporting?

You'd think so.
strangeshapedpotato · 09/06/2021 08:09

It's been inevitable for some time that the 21st would be delayed.

All that's been going on is the government have been awaiting more public-friendly evidence for why.

What's uncertain is what form such a delay would take - ideally they keep things exactly as they are, but my bet is that for political reasons they open things up a bit more, but not completely.

How long for is another question - really need at least 2 months and the summer written off to allow kids a normal return to school in September, but can't see them going for that...

My friend works for the local council who she says get wind of announcements around a week early. Yesterday they were advised there will be a formal announcement next Monday on a delay in the roadmap by two weeks minimum.
It seems likely anyway.

Ooh, that's interesting! {Picks up phone to newsdesk}
MRex · 09/06/2021 09:27

It's clear there's a need to slow down until everyone wanting it has had one jab and had it kick in, plus over 40s had 2 jabs, so that's 4 weeks delay. I reckon they'll open up larger weddings only.

strangeshapedpotato · 09/06/2021 09:28

LOL - I've a friend on the force and another who's a nurse who makes similar claims.
It's actually just internal gossip.

If that was happening at local councils accross the country, surely it would be common knowledge?

Honestly, that's nonsense. There is zero chance the Govt are telling Councils anything.

While I wouldn't be surprised if the delay is announced, it's widely expected and won't mean she has any early insight.

Local councils are supposed to plan for easing AND for delay, your mate doesn't have special information because the final decision hasn't yet been taken.
