First jab - AZ. Now what?

My DH has had his first jab nearly 12 weeks ago which was the AZ one. What happens now about his second dose given the risks? Is he offered a different jab or does he just not have it? He's under 40

Assuming you’re in the UK, he will be offered a second dose of AZ.

kimlo · 07/06/2021 19:14

He's offered az. I'm under 40 and I've had both.

MonicaGellerBing · 07/06/2021 19:15

Hi, yes I'm in the UK.

I'm under 40 and have had both doses of AZ.

It’s only under 40s who haven’t had a first dose offered something else. If you’ve had one dose of AZ you get the second as normal.

Rainbowsandstorms · 07/06/2021 19:39

The data is very much so still emerging re the risks associated with the second dose but if you have a look at the most recent gov yellow card report it tells you a bit more about the most recent data in relation to second doses www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting

There’s a good thread called alternatives to Astra Zeneca for under 40s (the second thread) that discusses this in detail too.

Professor Michael Markis is a haematologist on Twitter who has provided some really useful info too.

I’m also under 40 and due my second dose this weekend and am just weighing up the risks.

MRex · 07/06/2021 19:42

If he books it he'll be given AZ for his second dose. If he wants something else then he'll have to talk to his GP about why he thinks there's a medical need for him to be given a different vaccine, or he could wait a while until mixed doses are approved.

Thank you @Rainbowsandstorms some really useful links for me to check there.

Thanks everyone. Suppose it's just weigh up the risks. 😢

Has he not booked it already?

Pfizer is causing heart issues in young males, only a miniscule amount, so it could be the case going forward that AZ is preferential for this group. I think this is based on stats from Israel. I'm obviously no expert and my source is Dr. John Campbell.

MonicaGellerBing · 07/06/2021 21:38

Yes it's booked @Golden2021 we just weren't sure whether it was safe to have it

Yes he will be offered second AZ. I'm early 30's and had the AZ as I'm group 6. I will be happily having my second soon.

@MonicaGellerBing you’re welcome. Sorry just realised we are onto thread three so that will have the most up to date information. Although the standard gap between doses is 12 weeks the trials showed good efficiency at 12 weeks plus so while waiting an extra few weeks leaves him less protected the second dose would still work just as well if given a few weeks later. My personal feeling is that the risk re second doses for under 40 will be much clearer over the next few weeks. Mine was due this coming weekend but I’m waiting to see this weeks MRHA report and possibly next week’s too. Though currently the data is looking more reassuring than I thought it may.
