Is it possible to request Pfizer vaccine?

yellowfeathereddress · 07/06/2021 16:37

I would like the pfizer over moderna is it possible to request this before I get an appointment?
Already really stressed about it all as I know someone who was very ill from the AZ vaccine.
Thanks

It depends on your age and previous medical history.

VaxthePax · 07/06/2021 16:39

in a word, no.

dementedpixie · 07/06/2021 16:40

You have mentioned 3 vaccines there. AZ is not the same as Moderna. Is Moderna not more like Pfizer?

You don't usually get to choose tbh unless you are under 40 and then AZ is not normally 1st choice

Girlmama3 · 07/06/2021 16:40

Probably not but you can refuse and re book for a different vaccine centre. When I had my first jab there a sign at the door that said Pfizer clinic.

Great, clog the system up advice.
yellowfeathereddress · 07/06/2021 16:50

Thanks. I am under 40

I don't want to take an app and then get to the venue and turn it down this is why I am asking about if it's possible to check beforehand. If not I will refuse if moderna. Judge if you want to but this is what I feel comfortable having.
Tbh I am uncomfortable having any of them but I think there is so much pressure to have it in jobs and travelling it's not going to work out if I don't have any.

People have the right to access medical information and to discuss their concerns with a professional. And have a right to choose which vaccine suits their medical history. Better to clog up the system rather than your blood

PomegranateQueen · 07/06/2021 16:53

It's your body and they need your consent so yes you can refuse and re book if they only have moderna that day. I had mine this morning and they offered me a choice between Moderna and Pfizer. I would have had either but given the choice I went for Pfizer

Girlmama3 · 07/06/2021 16:53

To be fair, plenty of people did exactly that when az was first getting bad press.

If you don't want a certain vaccine, don't have it x

Freshprincess · 07/06/2021 16:55

Moderna is similar to Pfizer not AZ.
But no, it’s a get what you’re given situation.

This, I would rather people wasted a slot every so often to get thier vaccine of choice, then people not booking at all. I would have refused AZ if they still offered it to under 40s.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 07/06/2021 17:11

If you're under 40, the system will allocate you to a clinic that offers the appropriate vaccine. (Currently either moderna or pfizer as the alternatives to AZ)

yellowfeathereddress · 07/06/2021 17:12

Thank you for those understanding, I am terrified of any new drug because I've reacted badly to a few before and if I get sick only my dh who has health problems is there to help my young dc. I might still get sick but at least I chose this after looking into it all.

What are your concerns about Moderna?

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 07/06/2021 17:16

Also I only know one person who’s had Moderna, they’re not giving out much of it so you’re far more likely to get Pfizer anyway.

fallingsnowflakes · 07/06/2021 17:19

I was told it was a Pfizer clinic when I booked. Why don't you ring your GP and ask?

yellowfeathereddress · 07/06/2021 17:19

Because it's been approved for dc I feel safer taking that one. I have been really sick on some drugs before and am allergic to some but not anything in the vaccines afaik.

I asked my gp they won't tell me

My husband and I got the moderna on Saturday evening. Reluctantly as we didn't know anyone who has had it. I still have a terribly sore arm and body and my husband has the same and feels sick. I am breastfeeding and my little one has non stop screamed since I got it. I am about to call NHS 24 for advice. Not sure if it's related but wish I decline the vaccine now.

Nachobib · 07/06/2021 17:20

You are more likely to get Pfizer as we have more of it, but what does concerns over az have to do with moderna?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/06/2021 17:24

@VaxthePax

in a word, no.
in a word: yes

you can do it if booking through the NHS website
this is exactly what a friend of mine did for her son (she reacted badly to AZ) so suggested I'd do the same.

nordica · 07/06/2021 17:25

You don't really get a choice but the good news for you is that because the UK didn't order much of Moderna, it's mostly being administered at a few larger centres. I would recommend booking at a smaller centre or a local pharmacy and you should 100% get Pfizer.

That said I'm really glad I got Moderna as it was found very effective in the trials, and side effects are minimal. It's also pretty much identical to Pfizer (both are Messenger RNA vaccines) so I don't really understand your concern from that perspective.

yellowfeathereddress · 07/06/2021 17:25

Sorry the az concerns have basically made my anxiety around the whole thing worse than ever. I didn't make that clear. I am pro vaccine but I will turn down the moderna if I'm asked so I really would have liked to avoid doing this.
The biggest clinic near me a stadium has a notice saying last Pfizer was last week, my gp has said no more Pfizer in my local vaccination centre so it's making me even more nervous. I don't go out very often and I think the thought of having to decline it is making everything worse in my head!

OP posts:
yellowfeathereddress · 07/06/2021 17:26

Honestly I'm not saying there is a logical explanation other than as Pfizer has been approved for dc I feel better about it. I really don't intend to put anyone else off of anything. Just me being anxious!
