Someone explain the science: pregnant and Pfizer

I reluctantly went along to get my vaccination on Thursday. I was quite sure that I wasn't pregnant but did a pregnancy test in the morning to rule it out and it was negative. Got the shot and when I got home, noticed that a faint second line had developed. 4 subsequent tests have confirmed that I am pregnant, but it's very early days. My next period is due on Thursday, so the baby must literally have implanted when I got the vaccine. I was 8dpo.

I know the advice is for all pregnant women to get vaccinated but I wouldnt have gone through with it had I have known I was pregnant.

My next dose (pfizer) will be at 8 weeks. I just don't know what to do! I am going to speak to a dr soon but where I live (not in UK) they are not offering it to all pregnant women as standard, but on a case by case basis. I felt conflicted going through with the first one, and now feel even worse.

Can someone with scientific understanding please explain to me how the Pfizer mechanism works in relation to pregnancy?

Does anyone have first hand experience of having had Covid in pregnancy or knowing a pregnant woman who had Covid in pregnancy, and what were the outcomes? Last year the literature was saying that pregnant women were not at heightened risk and now they are?

Can someone please give me some advice?

I know a woman who had Covid before she was full term. She was very very unwell and was in a coma for 3 months and has only recently met her DD. Late 20s and no underlying health conditions.

@Motorina thank you. Theoretical side effects are just what I am looking for.

@anonymouse yes I will check in with my GP for sure. @Patapof that's terrible, and very sobering too. Thanks for sharing.

Waiting before having the second jab is not the official guidance.

I was a bit worried about the fever risk but I figured I would just take paracetamol and/or go into hospital to be checked if needed.

I monitored my temp and thankfully didn’t get a fever. I will be getting my second jab in pregnancy too as I am only half way along.

I'm pregnant. Had Pfizer at 12 and slightly before 24 weeks. I'm a medic by background (now a practicing psychiatrist). The consultant obstetricians I sought advice from basically put it this way: there no known or theoretical risk to your baby from the vaccine but there are known and recorded increased risks to you and your baby from catching covid. I also read the RCOG leaflet which was helpful. I have gestational diabetes too which puts me at an increased risk of poor covid outcomes too, if I were to catch it.

Seriously don’t let my thought experiment stop you! No evidence for it at all. Just the point is the scientists can’t say it’s 100% safe in scientific terms til you have disproved all those thought experiments. It is safe by any normal use of the word!

Thanks everyone and @motorina, that was exactly what I was after and I understood your thought experiment!
