What was the gap between your first & 2nd AZ doses?

I’m suffering with extreme anxiety and for weeks I’ve considered not having my second AZ vaccine.

I’ve booked an appointment for tomorrow and I’m just going to turn up and see how I feel 😬

My first dose was 12 weeks ago today.

Will this be okay to have my second tomorrow, slightly past 12 weeks?

Most people I know have had their 2nd AZ 11 weeks after their first.

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but my anxiety is awful and it’s playing tricks on me now and making me believe I’m going to get a blood clot because the gap between doses is too long...

Mine were 8 weeks apart

Canada are doing their second doses at 16 weeks and no studies yet on the effects of that. On the studies so far 8-14 weeks looks ideal, but each week here or there doesn't make a huge difference to be worth fretting over. I had my second dose at 10 weeks because I decided there wasn't enough difference to be worth waiting for 12 weeks (group 6), but 12 may be just about the best interval. It won't make any difference to side effects you get, those are about your immune system's response. Good luck, let the staff at the vaccination centre know as soon as you arrive that you're very nervous so that they can help you as much as possible.

No problem with just one day. The immunity from your first jab would just decline slowly over time.

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/06/2021 09:24

9 weeks

I was thinking about the optimum gap in terms of vaccine efficacy but within context of delta variant.

My second AZ is booked in at 11 weeks post first. That would be the 29th June. I'm weighing up cancelling the 11weeks appointment to try to get one in post 8 weeks.
If delta variant is increasing my thinking was getting second jab at 8 weeks would mean it would be 'activated" by 11 weeks post first....

Basically is there much of a difference in vaccine efficacy between 8 and 12 weeks and would any shortfall be offset by being 'better' protected against delta.... I guess I'm gambling on delta spread..

I know 50 plus and group 6 were brought forward to 8 weeks so I'm assuming the clinicians are happy with the maths?

crankyhousewife · 04/06/2021 09:34

My second dose was 14 weeks after my first as I had a sore throat which wouldn't go away and they don't like giving them if you're ill. No-one said it was a problem.

Studies on the difference show a small improvement at 12 weeks, but they are largely comparing with 6 weeks as those two dosing intervals had the most participants; moving from 76% to 82.4%. The time when it peaks from 6-14 weeks isn't clear, the problem being that it starts getting into some fairly tiny datasets and then it can be affected by age and health.

Anecdata, but posters in the ONS study even with health conditions all seemed to have antibodies confirmed by 10 weeks. So, balancing the various bits of knowledge and gaps in info, I felt comfortable moving my appointment from 12 to 10 weeks. It's worth being aware that the 4 UK Chief Medical Officers' advice is actually anywhere from 4-12 weeks; opinions from Ontario in Canada (state based decisions) and Ireland who are also shortening their gap as of this week seems to be that they don't expect much difference between 8 and 12 weeks, most important is just to get the second dose done.

MRex · 04/06/2021 20:10

By the way, all the numbers are also lower for India/Delta variant; 33% first dose and 66% 2 weeks after second dose. It's still possible when there's real world data that the 66% it it's 82.4% comparator would actually increase as the numbers were measured quite soon after the vaccine. Two reasons why the second dose real world efficacy might increase; slow burner where it seems Oxford AZ tends to take its time building up antibodies in some people, but also because early AZ doses were focused on care homes (Pfizer was used in the hospitals), so those who had a second dose by the time of reporting were more frail.

myrtleWilson · 04/06/2021 20:14

Thanks @mrex - it did occur to me after posting that I'm not sure if I can move it. I don't know if the national booking line is only set up to shift 2nd doses for those over 50 - I'll do some googling!

MRex · 04/06/2021 20:37

Some people on here have been able to, others not, so it's unclear. AZ is largely second doses now that under 40s are done, so there is more supply in most areas. Maybe cancel late at night so nobody nabs your appointment, so that you can see if there are slots? Best to try it soon before they open to under 30s as the site will make you queue even to change a booking when it's busy.

Monkeytennis97 · 04/06/2021 20:39

hellcatspangle · 04/06/2021 20:43

Bluntness100 · 04/06/2021 20:45

Mine was about ten weeks, go for it op, get your self protected.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 04/06/2021 20:51

I will be 10 weeks this coming Tuesday and I’m having my second dose on Thursday

ChilliChaos · 04/06/2021 20:53

A day short of 12 weeks

myrtleWilson · 04/06/2021 22:08

@MRex - saw on twitter that the Telegraph are reporting over 40s to bring forward to 8 weeks plus. Popped online and rebooked from end of June to next week - feel better for it! Thank you for your helpful input!

MRex · 04/06/2021 22:26

Good to hear you're happy with your date @myrtleWilson.

Etulosba · 04/06/2021 22:53

12 weeks to the day.
