Year 11s shouldn’t have finished school early

www.theguardian.com/education/2021/jun/03/schools-should-not-send-exam-year-pupils-home-early-says-ofsted-head

My DD went on exam leave on April 31st only attending school for the exams that were supposedly cancelled —but not—
They finished completely on 24th May despite missing months and months of school over their GCSE course, so what’s all this about? Our year 11s have been totally let down.

Another teacher bashing thread by mums who don't teach. What a surprise by the vitriolic mumsnetters.

DinkyDaisy · 04/06/2021 16:51

I work in education and have a year 11.
Not teacher-bashing- frustration.
My year 11 is being offered time in school in June and enrichment stuff after that.
However, terrified of being isolated for a 4th time...[and missing his Prom!]
Hard for everyone....

Can you suggest what you think schools should have done with regard to the constraints I have already listed? It is easy to say that something should be provided without actually looking at the practical issues.

solarlights - How would a one day a week bridging course work? The teachers that teach year 11 do not teach year 11 all day. They all have different specialties. The students are not all staying on for a levels. They are not doing the same subjects. Some are doing vocational courses. How would the school realistically provide the year 11's with a day of lessons relevant to their future courses?

My ds school has organised A level prep for June and other enrichment activities. Not full time but he will be in every day

Just think something like @DinkyDaisys dss school are doing sounds great and something my dd and her friends would be more than happy to do. Probably a logistical nightmare but obviously achievable as they’re doing it.

State school in area with high disadvantage.
Also a Prom which teachers are supporting. There is my ds fear! He is helping organise Prom plus being in school. He is scared of being isolated yet again...

@patsydarling no not teacher bashing I am a teacher myself and @cansu I wasn't suggesting that teachers could do anything at this stage. I started posting as I believe that it is wrong to suggest- as some posters did - that all year 11s were delighted to finish school. And several helpful teachers have actually agreed with that and made positive suggestions.

ChloeDecker · 04/06/2021 18:55

I’ve re-read again and still not seen anywhere anyone saying that before you first posted or that teachers were doing Year 11s a favour.

Foosterin · 04/06/2021 19:18

@ChloeDecker yes you're right actually.

Thanks. I truly am sorry about your Year 11 child and I do understand your frustration

Kitcat122 · 05/06/2021 08:14

My child's school has done the best they can. I'm just glad she's done and can relax and forget about all the stress.

My sons school are offering 4 weeks taster 6th form from 14th June. Open to all year 11's including those who may not get grades to get in and those that have chosen other colleges/ 6th forms. It is an introduction to 6th form options with no homework expectations and a promise of a welcoming and positive experience. As I work full time and there are limited options for travel etc I'm extremely grateful.
