Can You Mix Vaccines?

According to my friend who had her first AZ jab over 12 weeks ago she is having her 2nd jab in a couple of weeks but it will be Pfizer. I didn't know this was even possible? She did have a reaction to her first jab and is immuno-surpressed so maybe this is why. Anyone else had a mixture?

Here is the official guidance on when it’s appropriate to mix vaccines - see pages 13 and 14.

Basically, mixing vaccines should only be in exceptional circumstances, but a severe reaction to the first jab is one of them. I don’t think the immunosuppressed thing is likely to be the reason for the different vaccine; that’s usually only relevant when deciding on the interval between jabs, eg if a person is about to start immunosuppressive therapy, then they can have their second jab earlier than the usual 8 or 12 weeks.

I’m pretty sure advice will change after results of Comcov trial (results due June). U.K. may delay though as they don’t have enough mRNA 🙄. Huge batch due end August though.

Thank you, that's really interesting. I think it must be because of her reaction to AZ. She had said she wouldn't have her second jab due to this. I'm glad they have found a way she can have it.

I am a bit worried about the length of time in between them as she had her first the same day as me and I had my second 4 weeks ago.
