Is Covid serious for under 40’s??

My brother in law is really really struggling.

He’s 30 and has no health conditions except for being very overweight (he must have BMI > 40 as he’s had a vaccine early)

He’s convinced that if he gets Covid he will die.

I’m 31 and overweight but I don’t think if I caught Covid that I would die. (I don’t dispute that I might be ill with it)

Today I’ve checked the data and so far 627 people under the age of 40, have died from Covid....
That’s 0.10% of the the total deaths in the UK.

Am I being too relaxed for not being that fearful of Covid? Is brother in law in the minority group for people that are this fearful of Covid...? 🤷🏻‍♀️

That link says that 101 people aged 0-44 have died who don't have an underlying health condition, so not your 89 quoted, although you were only looking at under 40s, so I'll assume that's the discrepancy, BUT those numbers are only to June 2020. So a year ago basically. You may have noticed we had a little wave or two since then.

Plus if you look at the list of underlying conditions then you may be surprised to find you would be included.

Where is the list that shows what the underlying conditions are?

Watapalava · 30/05/2021 13:56

It also inc Wales when my original quote was England

Whether we have 2 or 5 waves the risk to under 40s is neglible

I’m not using the whole “without underlying conditons’ to imply they don’t matter but moreso to exclude them from current risk given most of those groups have been vaccinated

Is that without underlying health conditions? Where can I find this data?

Wherediditgo · 30/05/2021 14:20

1. As far as I am aware, the stats do not provide that information

Then how can you state it with any confidence?

I didn't.

Otherwise why would you have asked for it.

Impressive! You have the gift.

The WHO must be relieved. As will be doctors, scientists, and economists around the world.

Watapalava has used her crystal ball to see into a future where the heart, lung, kidney, and brain damage suffered by Long Covid patients has been cured. Likewise those who developed diabetes after Covid.

World rejoice!

Now, as you can see into the future can you give me some betting tips please?

You can't keep locking down to prevent people from getting long Covid. That's never what lockdowns were for.

@Waxonwaxoff0

I agree. My preference has always been border restrictions with proper quarantine for (genuinely) essential travel, mask adherance where necessary, good test and trace, and majority fully vaccinated (both doses - with booster if needed).
