Hypothetical question about the jab and testing positive!

I had the jab today, what would happen if I had unknowingly gone with Covid today? Would the vaccine not work? I'm asking this because when I went they asked if I had had Covid in the last 5 weeks and my babu has just work up with a massive temperature! I'm ok so just hypothetical.

You should have isolated and shouldn’t have gone to the vaccine centre.
Unlikely that your baby has CV, but current advice is that if you or anyone in your household has a temp, cough, or loss of taste, you should isolate and get tested, and all the household should isolate too.
They ask you if you have been around anyone who had symptoms of coronavirus, did you say no?
Sorry to be harsh but really this is not on.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure you've read my message properly. My baby has JUST woke up with a temp. He was fine today, I was fine today. I'm not a mind reader and didn't know he was going to wake up with a Temp this morning when I went otherwise I clearly would've have gone.

I really know the rules of isolating etc, thanks. I have had it drilled into me like everyone else had for the past 15 months....

The vaccine obviously won't have had time to be effective. As I am sure you know already. I haven't seen any research on this particular scenario. Though maybe some does exist somewhere.

My personal opinion is the vaccine takes longer to do its job than you would technically have covid. Therefore I see no reason it wouldn't be effective in the normal time scale. In fact having extra covid antibodies from the virus may make it better. No expert so just wild guessing.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose I was w bit more concerned that they advise you to not have it if you have Covid and why that's the case... would it cancel out the vaccine?
Like I sad completely hypothetical! Just at the doctors with my baby. Amazing service from 111 and the nhs overall today!

Glad they are looking after your baby so well. . Hope she is ok.

I think nobody really has the absolutely answer to your question. It definitely means the immune system would be working flat out already fighting covid then having to deal with the vaccine too. What effect that could have I don't know.

One reason the do recommend waiting if you have covid is this:

A vaccine while you are infected can make it a little difficult to distinguish vaccine side effects from milder Covid-19 symptoms. Say, for example, you already have Covid-19 and develop a fever or headache after getting vaccinated. Are those symptoms due to the vaccine or the virus? It can make monitoring the course of your illness more difficult. The analogy would be being lactose intolerant, getting food poisoning, and then eating a whole wheel of cheese while you are still sick. Sure cheese is delicious and seemingly can make anything better. But eating a whole wheel of cheese while already sick could make it more difficult to tell whether diarrhea is due to your lactose intolerance or to the food poisoning.

There is some limited evidence that for those who have had covid and then the vaccine that the vaccine acts like the second dose and gives extra immunity. To get this benefit there would need to be a gap between infection and vaccine so that would be an extra reason to have the stated 4 weeks. But no issue if there isn't.

Thanks for the replies!
I don't know what's going on with my son and 2 separate doctors have told me that they won't test him unless he goes into hospitals he doesn't need to go in, still has a fever :(
I might just keep testing myself in the meantime!
As long as having it doesn't cancel the vaccine out then that's fine with me! :)
