When to seek medical advice (3 yr old)?

3 year old tested positive last Sunday (16/5) and had a few fevery nights but seemed to be on the mend.

She still has a cough which doesn't seem to be improving, but assumed that was part of the recovery and it'll go in a few days.

We've just been up all night with either the cough (sounds like it's in her chest) to the point where she was gagging/gasping for breath between coughs or else she has been in constant tears with mouth/cheek/ear pain. Have given calpol but it hasn't done anything for her pain/tears and at a loss as to what it could be if not covid related?

Not sure what to do? At what point do we contact someone for advice?

IMO if you are wondering that, with a little child, it’s time to get them checked.
Hope all better soon

Daisydoor12 · 27/05/2021 06:07

The point you would have contacted medical professionals for any other illness. You know your child best, you know how they are when they’ve been unwell before. Don’t hesitate if you’re at all concerned better to contact someone you are the advocate for your child.

MRex · 27/05/2021 06:08

The minute you wonder if you need medical help for a child is the time to call for medical help. If she's gasping for breath then she needs to be seen immediately. Call 111 to arrange it.

Thank you, just not sure if this is normal end of covid symptoms or something to get checked but will phone up for advice to be safe.

Fingers crossed for less tears and some sleep soon

I would phone asap for anything concerning breathing.

picturesandpickles · 27/05/2021 06:12

Just to add - it is not your responsibility to know, you can ask for help.

This in buckets. I’d give 111 a call. She does sound poorly bless her. Hopefully she’s on the mend soon.

I would call 111. Any indication of shortness of breath or difficulties with airways is a complete red flag.

TokyoSushi · 27/05/2021 07:00

Yep agree, call 111

Downtown36 · 27/05/2021 07:04

Worth getting her checked out for sure.

I had to attend A&E with my 1year old in December and at the time I’d had a positive test - it wasn’t a problem at all, we just had to wait in a designated waiting room.

Suzi888 · 27/05/2021 07:06

DD had this type of thing as a baby. We ended up in hospital no real diagnosis, just told her small body couldn’t cope with a constant cough-( this was pre covid.) She was only drinking water, no food or milk.
Treatment was to wake her every hour and use a nebuliser/asthma pump.
I’d been back and forth to the doctors the whole time prior, worrying time.
Hope your little one feels better soon.

Girlmama3 · 27/05/2021 07:15

Call 111. Even to get some peace of mind that she’s coming through it. Or, in case they think she might need a bit of help. I hope she’s ok x

@Downtown36 that's good to know! I tested positive 2 days after LO so today is my last day of isolation but hopefully will still be able to go with her 🤞🏼

@Suzi888 that sounds terrifying!

Possibly turned into a chest infection and may need antibiotics/steroids. I’m sure your doctor will see her, as it’s been over 11 days now since testing positive.

MRex · 27/05/2021 13:26

How is she feeling now? Has she had someone listen to her lungs?

oneda · 27/05/2021 14:02

@MRex just back home now. Got everything checked and her lungs sound okay but they said it seems to have turned into an infection as her eardrum is red and bulging so have a course of antibiotics which will hopefully help!

Now to try and convince her to take the medicine as she's not keen on trying it Hmm

Suzi888 · 27/05/2021 15:02

Glad she’s been checked, good luck with the meds! Something nice afterwards as bribery perhaps! Wink

Mindymomo · 27/05/2021 16:27

Glad you got her seen, try and get a double dose in her before bed, which hopefully get her better, poor thing.
