Could the vaccine have 'squirted' back out ?

I know this sounds silly but, can any HCP tell me please?

Suspect I had Covid about a year ago. Dd still has post viral fatigue
I had my 1st vaccination early March. OxAz.
Felt like my arm had been punched. Within 12 hours had thumping headache, a little nausea, chills and sweats for about 2/3 days.
2nd Vaccination 2 weeks ago: nothing, not even a sore arm.
Great yes?

But... with my 2nd jab as the needle came out so did some blood. It just squirted out and ran down my arm and dripped off my elbow. HCP got some cotton wool balls. After about 6 of them soaked through it started to slow. She seemed a bit rattled and asked if I was 'usually like that, why hadn't I said'. I said that I'd had plenty of jabs in my time (& I have B12 every 12 weeks) and had never had that before.
It stopped and I went home.

I'm grateful for both jabs and not looking for side effects but could it be that I didn't get the full amount of the 2nd jab as it came out again with the blood?

It'll be a capillary on your skin, did you maybe have a top rolled up tightly at the top of your arm? The dose will be on your muscle, so that won't come out. Most people get fewer side effects from the second dose of Oxford AZ, so it's quite normal. It must be a relief not to have side effects and be "done"now?

*IN your muscle, typo!

Just a sleeveless top (always easier with jabs / blood tests)
It was quite the squirt, though I appreciate a little bit of blood goes a long way. I wasn't rattled, but the HCP was, and 2 or 3 others came over 'to see', which then worried me.
Yes, hoped for less side effect 2nd dose, just hope it will be effective.

Maybe you should ask your GP about it, they might want to run a full blood count in case there's a reason for that?

52andblue · 25/05/2021 11:30

Good to know that as it's into muscle it's not likely to come out again, even if some blood does though!

I have had the odd one I've given bleed a bit, one person did ask if it meant the vaccine had come out but I assured them it's very rapidly absorbed into the surrounding muscle tissue.
Yours does sound like it bled quite a lot, perhaps they hit a large capillary? Or if it was done too low down they could have hit an artery, many people give injections too low, there's only a small part of the upper arm that is suitable for injection.
Some people do get zero side effects. A very few do not even get a sore arm.

@MRex I am due an NHS (annual) blood test on Thurs.
I guess I could ask the phlebotomist then maybe?
(really struggled to get a GP appointment for my Dd recently so no chance re this I shouldn't think and I'd not want to bother them)
it's just never happened before, hence the slightly odd Qu

I'd ask the GP, just because they might add something to your Thursday tests but the phlebotomist can't do that. It's probably nothing, but if it's unusual for you then worth asking.

whatswithtodaytoday · 25/05/2021 11:53

You could pay for an antibody test? Wait a couple of weeks though, to make sure they've done their thing.

MRex · 25/05/2021 11:53

Or, I guess you could wait and see if you bleed more on Thursday too, that would settle if it's a one-off. Are they doing FBC on Thursday?

52andblue · 25/05/2021 12:24

@MRex yes I think so? (it's about 7 vials of blood each time)
a good idea to see if Thurs goes 'as normal' thanks
