Good news as every small thing to detect Covid 19 helps reduce the spread I hope.

I think this is brilliant - be so useful at airports & maybe football/mass event kinda things!

Dogs are ace 🥰

SonnetForSpring · 24/05/2021 12:03

Yes, how amazing! This will definitely help.

These dogs are so clever

Interesting how uninterested mn appears to be in this news. Lol

Saw this on the news and thought it was amazing!!!

I don't know how long it takes to train dogs up for this but you can imagine this being incredibly helpful at airports or in Universities.

It really is mind blowing!

Doesn't surprise me. Dogs can smell cancer, pregnancy, all sorts. Looks they're way more accurate than the actual lab tests too!

I was so pleased to see this had worked.
I was given a flyer to take part in the trials when I had a test last summer. It wasn't practical to take part but I was willing it to work.

Because it's not news, we've known dogs can detect covid since last September.

I wonder how long someone smells like Covid, though? Many people still test positive after they've recovered, I wonder if they still smell of Covid after they've recovered.

JungleIsMassive · 25/05/2021 09:53

This has been known for quite sometime! But yes, it's great.

Dogs are incredible. My littlest one is a scent hound and the day I had my vaccine she refused to leave my side. Lying on me, pawing, staring at me all bloody day long. I felt absolutely fine but her nose was obviously telling her different. Very freaky.

SpnBaby1967 · 25/05/2021 11:09

Its great news, but not a viable use outside of small events like sniffing a plane from a high risk country as dogs can only work for 20 minutes at a time.

megletthesecond · 25/05/2021 22:11

They had one of the dog owners on Greg James on radio 1 this morning. Apparently one of the dogs had seven Shock previous owners but they've trained him up and he's doing really well.

I was so pleased to hear this trial had been successful. I am constantly amazed at what animals can do (not just dogs).

XenoBitch · 25/05/2021 22:17

Cool, but not sure how it is useful right now. In what capacity would they be used? I mean, if a drug sniffer dog alerts, the person then still goes on to have a proper search etc. The dog alone is not relied on.
Same with cancer.... person worries about their dog pawing at a particular spot. Still takes months to get a diagnosis.
From how my dog has been behaving, I should be getting my clean PJ bottoms checked for Covid or cancer.
