Anaphylactic shock after antibiotics. Pregnant. Vaccine. Help

I have previously had an anaphylactic reaction to ciprofloxacin.

I am pregnant and have just been offered the vaccine but I can't find any sensible information about if I can have it or not. My GP was less than helpful and said just go along and talk to the people administering it.

Does anyone know anything that might help?

I carry an EpiPen for an anaphylactic allergy to ibuprofen, aspirin and ondansetron. I've had both Pfizer's and was advised it was absolutely fine. I had my EpiPen ready 😂

I'm a vaccinator. Unless you're allergic to one of the ingredients then you should be able to have the vaccine. At my centre we'd want you to hang around for 15 minutes afterwards to check you're OK.

Lots of good information on the Anaphylaxis UK website, and they have a helpline:

You will need to talk to the vaccination centre about the ingredients of the vaccines available. Have you been given advice before about what to avoid specifically?
It might be helpful to print a list of the Ciprofloxacin ingredients to take with you, although they should be able to look it all up it might give you confidence that everything's been checked.
You can look up ingredients here, I've attached the tablets ingredients as a screenshot but if you had it in another form then you can search for and copy those ingredients: www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/3484/pil#gref.

I don't know ingredients of the vaccines, I think you'll need to find out on the day if there are any you can't have. Some vaccinators post here though and might be able to help.

If it helps my DF has had an anaphylactic reaction to penicillin and was absolutely fine with Pfizer

Amelia666 · 21/05/2021 14:34

@whataballbag that is helpful to me as I’m allergic to penicillin and am expecting to be offered the Pfizer as I’m mid 30s and this seems to be offered instead of AZ recently- been getting very nervous as a result!

MRex · 21/05/2021 14:36

Ciprofloxacin looks to have macrogol in it, which is polyethylene glycol(PEG), which used in both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

l am an amateur, take the word of the vaccinators as there are a range of ingredients, but I think you can only have Oxford Astrazeneca if that's what you're allergic to.

Glad to be of help! He said that when he got there they had a word with the doctor on site to make sure he could have it then he had to wait for 15 minutes afterwards (which I'm pretty sure is standard anyway) then sent him off on his Merry way Smile

This is the official advice.

Known allergies, unless to vaccine ingredients, are not a contra-indication.

If you have epipens take them with you, but they do have full resus kit at every vaccine site.
