Is it the law or just guidance for staff to wear masks whilst serving indoors in pubs and restaurants? Thanks

The law.

Northernsoullover · 20/05/2021 14:56

Yep. Law.

Thank you, I thought it was. I work in a pub and the landlord is discouraging us to wear masks, feeling pretty upset over it

If your employer is actively encouraging you to disobey the guidance putting you at risk then surely you could send an anonymous tip off to the brewery or police?

It's not the law, it is good practice. You would not be committing an offence, your employer may be in breach of H&S regulations.

The law on this matter is The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Wearing of Face Coverings in a Relevant Place) (England) Regulations 2020. The Regulations do not apply to employees in the course of their employment.

In terms of health and safety, your employer is obliged to provide a 'covid safe' working environment. If you believe he is not doing so, you should contact the local council, who in most areas are responsible for monitoring this.

It is a legal requirement

"Face coverings must be worn by retail, leisure and hospitality staff working in any indoor area that is open to the public and where they’re likely to come into contact with a member of the public. This includes:

shops
supermarkets
bars
pubs
restaurants
cafes
banks
estate agents
post offices
public areas of hotels and hostels"
