Anyone gambled with trying to bring second vaccine forward

monkeypuzzeltree · 18/05/2021 22:07

I'm not in any at risk group, I'm 43. Keen to bring second vaccine through but you have to cancel before finding out if there are sooner slots. I had AZ for first jab, second due late July.

Any views or tips I'm missing? Thanks all.

Watching with interest as I'd like to bring my 2nd jab forward just a few days (so 10 weeks after my 1st jab rather than 11) so I'm fully vaccinated 2 weeks before I go on a work trip overseas 😬

Was thinking of calling 119 to see if they can move it for me- have you tried that?

Twiglets1 · 18/05/2021 22:23

Yes you’re missing the fact it is only the 50 and overs they are currently focussing on and trying to get vaccinated earlier than their existing 12 week appointments

Disjunkie357 · 18/05/2021 22:29

Yep we brought ours forward, age 40 and 49. Cancelled original one and rebooked for 8 weeks after first jab on nhs website. There was tons of availability at multiple centres (much more than when I originally booked!)

You do have to risk cancelling your original one, but I figured worse case scenario is I would rebook my cancelled appointment.

Backofbeyond50 · 18/05/2021 22:31

I cancelled and rebooked mine.

UselessTrees · 18/05/2021 22:34

I'm 41 and was able to move mine from 30th July to the 9th. I only rebooked as the original venue was inconvenient, but it offered me earlier dates so I took one.

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 19/05/2021 01:55

I’m probably just going to wait the full time, or if there is a genuine surplus of vaccines (which are being hoarded and not sent to countries that need them).

Playing the system to bring forward a second dose so you can go on holiday to a country where an over 50 hasn’t had their 1st jab? Yeah, I’m not morally bankrupt.

picknmix1984 · 19/05/2021 02:03

I didn't have to cancel to get an earlier date. I just put my dob in and it came up with a date two weeks before the previous date.

Gothichouse40 · 19/05/2021 02:13

I had to change mine to a later date, still within the 12 weeks. There were hardly any appointments though.

PaulaTrilloe · 19/05/2021 06:30

I managed to get an end of day session walkin on the vaccine bus visiting my neighbourhood (week 8) and then immediately cancelled my swiftqueue appointment (week 12)

Mindymomo · 19/05/2021 06:35

I am due my second in 2 weeks so don’t want to risk loosing that appointment. It’s a shame the system doesn’t let you see what’s available before you cancel though.

You would be rebooking a 2nd jab earlier to ensure the greatest protection to yourself and others (including unvaccinated over 50s at your holiday destination).

That's sounds like a morally excellent plan.

Realitea · 19/05/2021 07:17

I got mine earlier than normal as I live with someone who is immunocompromised
I just went to book my second jab and it’s eight weeks after the first. Sooner than I expected. I wouldn’t have thought to check if it wasn’t for this thread. Thanks!

newnortherner111 · 19/05/2021 07:19

No, as it is only a fortnight away.

RoseDelatour · 19/05/2021 08:27

I’ve just cancelled my 2nd appt and rebooked it for 4 weeks earlier (so I’ve got an 8 week gap, instead of 12). Thanks OP, didn’t think about trying that before reading your post

RoseDelatour · 19/05/2021 08:28

Forgot to add I’m early 40s, so I’d definitely try the NHS website OP

Nonbibblebibble · 19/05/2021 08:31

‘ Walk in local vaccination centre and ask to be added to list for end of the day left overs. This worked for my friend.’

Would work at our vacc centre - there are no ‘leftovers’. As the clinic end the vaccine in drawn up per patient as needed. Undrawn up vaccine is kept in the fridge til the next clinic.
We wouldn’t be impressed with a healthy person in their 40s trying to get an early 2 vaccine - not a Hope we’d call you...

Nonbibblebibble · 19/05/2021 08:31

Wouldn’t work!

JulietBravo999 · 19/05/2021 14:20

It worked for me - cancelled and rebooked AZ for 3 weeks earlier on the NHS site, thanks to the other thread. As I work with unvaccinated (and now unmasked) children I’m very relieved.

Over 50’s and under 40’s now have the 8 week rule so it’s logical that the 40-49 age group can go earlier too.

Don’t know if it’s possible with Pfizer or Moderna though? There is obviously plenty of AZ to go round.

nordica · 19/05/2021 14:35

It wouldn't be jumping the queue ahead of more vulnerable people in groups 1-9 getting theirs, as the 8/10/12 week point will most likely be at least a few weeks later for anyone under 50 anyway. (Yes I know some people in groups 1-9 may have had their 1st vaccine later for various reasons.)

User657849 · 19/05/2021 14:38

I’m 50 but still haven’t received text saying I can do it.

I risked it and moved it from June 8 to this Friday.

MattDamon · 19/05/2021 14:45

South London. Just changed mine and partners to 3 weeks earlier. Tons of availability.

Mindymomo · 19/05/2021 14:55

Had text from doctors to say I can bring date forward, only one place comes up, and no appointments. Will try later, in case I can get it earlier than 4 June.

Rainbowsandstorms · 19/05/2021 15:00

For those that are younger and have had AZ the overall efficiency of the vaccination is reduced when the gap between doses is less than 12 weeks. I can dig out the stats for anyone who would like to see them. So the benefit is that you’re fully vaccinated earlier but the downside is that the over all protection you receive is reduced. The risks v benefits will depend on individual circumstances but it’s worth being aware of.

Freshprincess · 19/05/2021 15:10

Anyone done it with Moderna? Or is it all AZ?
