Scared, need perspective (I have OCD)

NC'd. Also I believe (via GP) I have OCD but am awaiting assessment.

This afternoon DD was making scones. One fell onto the kitchen floor and she picked it up - 5 second rule. DS then went and ate it. I'm scared he may become infected and that I've inadvertently harmed him. I know seeking reassurance isn't what I should be doing but I need some perspective about this before I start searching the internet. I'm trying to keep calm for the DC.

It's really, really unlikely he'll get unwell with anything that's fallen on the floor. And even less likely he'll catch Covid that way, as I assume no one in the house has Covid (& would be really unlikely anyhow).

Definitely worth speaking to your GP about the anxiety though - but sounds like you're on the case!

I pick up stuff from the floor and eat it without a second thought, and I have a dog! I have never become ill from this. It is unlikely your DS will come to any harm whatsoever.

Have you ever tried CBT? Sounds like could really help Flowers

Germs from the floor once in a while will do him some good. I presume you clean the floor on occasion, so there won't be much anyway. Definitely worth mentioning to the GP in discussing your condition as something you think might be indicative of excessive concern.

He certainly will not catch covid from this, if your DD had covid he'd catch it from her breathing near him and not from the floor. Virus particles don't for live very long outsude bodies in real world conditions.

Don't search the Internet. He'll be fine Flowers

Thank you everyone. That has helped. I understand it's my anxiety which'll hone in on the slightest risk. My previous rationality over this sort of thing has completely left the building but it's been a difficult time of it. Yes, waiting for assessment and hopefully therapy which I understand will likely be a form of CBT.

OCD here too Flowers. I had several sessions of CBT through the NHS a few years back. The psychologist recommended I read Overcoming OCD by David Veale. Basically a summary of everything I learnt from her in the sessions. I highly recommend it. Best wishes.
