Bubbles after June 21st

Anyone "in the know" what the advice will be regarding class or year group bubbles after June (if the reopening does run to plan)? Was just wondering about the transition from one year to the next (in primary) as meeting new teachers / spending times in new classrooms usually happen? Be good to think the kids would get a chance to meet their new teachers or classes before the end of a turbulent year?

My school has planned for some transition days in July for children to meet new teachers / see new classrooms but who knows?!

palacegirl77 · 17/05/2021 15:28

its interesting because if bubbles are still in place that would go against it wouldnt it? Any teachers heard anything?

Teacher here-there has been no updated guidance so nobody will have heard anything new. We are presuming transition processes will be very different to normal this year and we aren’t mixing classes up as we normally do -they’ll go up as they are.

Thats really interesting - as parents we really wanted our kids to stay in the same class but school are adamant they will be mixed - so presumably they will have to do some sort of transition?

Well, there will some sort of ‘transition’ but it’s up to them how they do it. Transition last year for some year groups not in school (for my own children) was watching their new teacher reading stories online from home.

We didnt even get that! My daughter had never seen her teachers before she started back in Sept!

I can’t see why children staying at the same school couldn’t spend their day in their new classroom, given teachers do cross bubbles anyway. The only implication would be if a teacher tested positive within 48 hours they would close 2 classes.

I’m not sure whether in person transition from one school to another would be possible or not though as that would mix children from lots of schools/nurseries

My DC is year 6 so moving from primary to secondary in Sept. Normally there would be a moving up day but this year it will be online instead.

Just in case you're concerned, by daughter is in Y6 so moved up last Sept to secondary with no transition at all (just an online video) - she settled absolutely fine, the teachers really worked hard to make the Y7s settle in so well.

I am a teacher and my school are planning for children to visit their new teachers in their classrooms - I guess its like us all using the hall one after the other for PE / lunch, so long as the bubbles don't mix enroute! But anything could change by then?!

Hmm this isn't the case in DC or DHs schools (primary). The bubble rules apply to staff too - so Dh for example can only be around the staff/kids in his year group bubble. If he wants to meet with someone teaching a different year group they have to socially distance, wear masks etc or (more often) use Teams for a call. Staff meetings for all school are done via Teams to avoid teachers and staff crossing bubble rules.

At my school we remain in year group bubbles and avoid teachers crossing them wherever possible. We have had quite a few cases and it would have been a nightmare working out who would need to isolate if staff mixed a lot across classes.

It’s certainly the case for my 5 year old that other staff take his class a couple of days a week that are usually in other classes, and I think my 9 year old (at a different school) also has teachers covering some subjects who also go in other classes (but may maintain more distance given the kids are older)

My child's year 6 and has transition day at new senior school in July

DragonflyInn · 17/05/2021 22:34

Last year our school managed to get the children together in their new classes with their new teacher for an hour outside on the school field. I’m hoping they will at least be able to do the same again this year.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/05/2021 11:31

Last year our transition was walking out of school on 20th March and back in in September.
In June we got a text from one teacher saying she was now teaching yX and work would be set by SMT.
Fortunately my child with ASD was already aquainted with his new teacher for this year from an extra-curricular.

My other child's teacher did a "meet the teacher" at the end of their weekly zoom quiz as his teacher was kind enough not to dump his class part-way through the year without a backwards glance.

(Awaits a deluge of daffodils for not creeping with gratitude for having one child left with an unacceptably poor education for 4 months while the sibling's teacher did put in a fair effort).

I hope that they will get to visit their new teacher and room this time round.

UserAtRandom · 19/05/2021 11:33

School bubbles have never been an actual requirement though? Which is why every school does things in a slightly different way.
My DC's secondary school doesn't do a transition day for Year 6s (ever, even when not Covid). They use the first day of term to do transition stuff. So that's always an option.
