Will some areas by nature, just have higher numbers no matter what? (Glasgow)

I'll admit from the outset that I am gutted that I'm in an area stuck in level 3 so this may cloud my judgement!

So the rest of the country opens up today but once again Glasgow is stuck in level 3. Since the pandemic began Glasgow has been subjected to far stricter conditions than the rest of the country.

I have friends with businesses in hospitality that have not survived this, people I know that another few weeks or lockdown will mean the end of their business and friends who have lost jobs.

I do think for a massive city Glasgow can't be judged in the same way as smaller towns and cities, I think there must be a better way of doing it. Glasgow can't be kept locked down indefinitely, it's no way to live.

(And this isn't about Kenmure St/Palestine/Rangers)

I agree and personally think that scotgov should have sped up vaccinations in Glasgow.

SandyCane · 17/05/2021 10:49

I think that is the plan now, but too little too late.

I think holding back the whole area in level 3 was disproportionate for 2 pockets of high cases.

You're right, it's very unfair to keep the entirety of Glasgow in high restrictions.

Tarriance · 17/05/2021 10:54

I have heard that in more affected areas 18 & over will start getting invited for vaccinations

DancesWithDaffodils · 17/05/2021 11:01

I'm not particularly familiar with the Glasgow area compared to the rest of Scotland, but round me (NE England) we have had numbers that are stubbon to fall, and quick to rise.
I know very few people who can work from home. Many households have at least one person out working in factories, schools, shops and other places where fully remote working never really happened.
Add to that some of the most deprived areas in England, and (after a high initial response) lower than average vaccination levels I suspect we will get screwed again with covid Sad

ParkheadParadise · 17/05/2021 11:07

It feels like we've been locked down forever in Glasgow.
I've just seen that in East Renfrewshire numbers are also rising.
I'm 43 had my first vaccine, due my second in July.

You say it’s not about recent events but those morons on Saturday really have not helped matters in Glasgow.

TheKeatingFive · 17/05/2021 11:19

Yes absolutely. The way to deal with these surges now is increased testing and ramped up vaccination. We know that local lockdowns achieve nothing except tanking local businesses.

SandyCane · 17/05/2021 11:41

I absolutely know that Saturday will not have helped, but having seen another thread descend into sectarianism, I was trying to avoid that. The decision to keep Glasgow in L3 was made prior to that (although perhaps with that in mind!)

I just feel with everything that has been tried Glasgow's numbers haven't dropped enough, but have significantly, all that lockdown is really doing now is ruining businesses (and having a real detrimental effect on people's well-being)

It is madness, my friend is in L3 across the street is L2, which is her nearest shop, literally footsteps from her home, but she shouldn't use it?

I don't know is targeting smaller pockets within the city is the answer either, as it's the same scenario as my friend above. I'm just so frustrated with it all. It seems for us there is no end in sight. Even last year Glasgow was locked down further, it's just too much now.

So 161 new cases in the whole of Scotland. 68 people in hospital in the whole of Scotland.

Glasgow and Moray should never have been held back

It doesn't seem proportionate. Neighbouring authorities, both with rising rates. One has people mixing indoors with no SD, the other no mixing indoors at all.

RedcurrantPuff · 17/05/2021 18:48

I agree with you, NS doesn’t give a stuff though.

RedcurrantPuff · 17/05/2021 18:51

Of course it should be targeted to the problem areas. The problem is they are in the FM constituency. There’s no way she’d have done this to Glasgow before the election either. But the votes are in so up goes the drawbridge.

Stinkywizzleteets · 17/05/2021 18:55

Sadly the numbers on a Monday are often unrepresentative. We’ll know better tomorrow and Wednesday whether numbers are truly dropping but in reality we won’t know for a fortnight because of that which we cannot mention.

As far as I can tell very few are left heeding the rules anyway. Aside from drinking inside pubs it’s much the same as level3 was. Everyone has been popping in and out of each other’s home/flat for months now and like children they will still go on and blame the Scottish govt for it all and for pushing them to it.
