If you are in your 20s or 30s and unvaccinated so far how worried are you about the Indian variant?

We are late thirties and hopefully able to book this week but I’m feeling very worried.

I keep reading things and seeing anecdotal posts from people who say that people in their 30s and 40s in India are being seriously compromised with the illness but I don’t
Know if this is true?! I saw a post on here that said a doctor at a Mumbai hospital said this but they didn’t provide a link.

Are you worried? Or are you looking forward to getting out there? I was really excited about all our plans but now I’m half dreading them because I think I’ll just be anxious all the time and am wondering if we should wait until our first vaccine kicks in at least.

I’ve lost the ability to balance risk I think :(

I’m 36, and I’m very worried that we will go back into some form of lockdown. Not worried about my health. I’m a teacher, so I can’t give that any headspace.
Hospitality, children’s education, mental health continue to suffer. It’s too much.

beebopalola · 17/05/2021 08:28

Yes the idea of another lockdown is hideous.

We have a hotel stay planned baby free next week but I have to admit I’m unsure about it
Now. I want to do our bit to support the hospitality industry though!

I think having a baby also makes me feel way less risk averse than I was before

I find that posters here are not representative of real life.

The majority of people where I work are too young to have been vaccinated and it's only ever a topic of conversation amongst those of us who are old enough i.e. comparing dates and experiences

On the whole imo people are getting on with their lives and looking forward to today's changes

@Waxonwaxoff0

30 and unvaccinated. Not worried in the slightest and will be back in the pubs this weekend. Rather take my chances than carry on with this half life, it's been over a year.

@Twizbe

I'm not worried about getting sick. I'm worried that my half term trip to see my parents will have to be cancelled :(
Yes, I'm more concerned about plans being cancelled!
boobot1 · 17/05/2021 08:53

Not remotely worried, the risks are minuscule at our age.

PicsInRed · 17/05/2021 09:07

If you approach this logically, covid is known to badly affect those with diabetes, India has a high rate of diabetes, India also has a large number of people living in poverty and therefore one would expect diabetics to have a shorter life span. The natural consequence of this is a greater proportion of younger covid patients as it is them who have survived diabetes thus far, in order to contract covid.

I'm not concerned about the Indian variant, however will be vaccinated in order to plan ahead and ensure I'm likely protected against any future vairant which may be more deadly to my profile.

pissface · 17/05/2021 09:11

Not at all

Brabraboo · 17/05/2021 09:14

Very worried but mostly because I’m in third trimester of pregnancy and we are being told we are high risk and advised to shield but aren’t being prioritised for the vaccine and just have to wait for our age group. By which time il have given birth anyway.

Watercoloursky · 17/05/2021 09:21

34, not vaccinated yet (though my arm is ready for whichever one they want to give me when I'm eligible!); OH (42) had his first jab last week. Not worried in the least, and not changing our plans - we're so excited about my partner's (fully vaccinated) mum coming to stay on Friday - she lives too far away to visit without staying over, and we haven't seen her in person since September... thank goodness for Zoom, but it will be wonderful to catch up properly at last.

89redballoons · 17/05/2021 09:29

I'm 34 - three months too young to be able to book my vaccination this week Sad but hopefully soon.

It does seem like every time there is a new variant or a new wave, people say "and this time it's affecting young people more". I definitely have heard this about the Brazilian variant but we didn't see that effect in the UK - granted the Brazilian variant never became dominant here.

A friend of mine who is a doctor said she saw people in their 30s/40s/50s getting extremely ill with covid at the start of this year. The fact is that even if a much smaller proportion of younger people get ill than older people, doctors on the ground are going to see and remember the young people. That includes here and in India, and is why the government and their advisors need more data on the Indian variant rather than asking individual doctors for anecdotes. Doctors aren't epidemiologists and they don't pretend to be.

For me personally, I am not overly concerned yet about the Indian variant. That's firstly because the overall rates of covid in my area are very low at the moment and the variant hasn't been detected here yet. It's also because although I haven't been vaccinated, my mum and my in-laws have, and so has my best friend who works in the NHS - those are the people I would most worry about either catching covid from or giving it to.

I'm not going to go nuts now things are opening up, but I will carry on taking my toddler to baby group, and out for the odd meal in a pub garden, and to playdates in friends' gardens and will probably go inside if it rains. We have a self catering holiday in the UK booked next week and I'm looking forward to that, too. We all massively need the break and more than a year of restrictions has really taken its toll. I'm probably more worried about the effect of continued lockdown on my relationship and my toddler's development than I am about me personally getting ill with covid/the Indian variant, to be honest.

OliveTree75 · 17/05/2021 09:32

I am 33.not worried at all although I already had very mild covid in march this year. My DP is 36 and getting vaccine on friday. We are seeing friends inside at the weekend

Twizbe · 17/05/2021 10:47

Have I missed something? Can over 35s book now? (I'm 37 and keen to get done)

10storeylovesong · 17/05/2021 10:56

38 and unvaccinated - booked for this Thursday. Obese so at some risk. Still not worried. I've worked front line police throughout, DH worked frontline NHS, children been at school and nursery. We've got so far without catching it. My whole job revolves around risk assessment, and in all honesty theres so many more things that could harm us than covid. We will be carrying on with our lives as much as possible within the guidelines. Life is too short and precious to live in fear.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 17/05/2021 10:58

Late thirties. Well. Until Wednesday. Not remotely worried.

HarrietOh · 17/05/2021 11:00

34, not vaccinated yet and already had COVID (only had a headache) - I think because I've already had it I'm not worried in the slightest. Friends who haven't are very excited to get the vaccine, where as I'm not fussed and getting it for the good of society. Different to when I normally pay for the flu jab each year as the flu made me quite poorly a few years ago!

User135644 · 17/05/2021 11:01

I'm not particularly worried but i've been shut away for 14 months WFH and not really been anywhere or done anything. Therefore, the way I see it is what's another few weeks until i've at least had a vaccine?

I'd begrudge staying at home all that time only to pick the virus up just before I get a vaccine.

If I get Covid after having a vaccine (at least giving it weeks to take effect) then so be it.

whatswithtodaytoday · 17/05/2021 11:08

39 and vaccinated this weekend. I'm still going to be cautious - nothing indoors for me until I'm two weeks past my second vaccination.

I am a bit worried it will spread quickly through the unvaccinated now and make it harder to avoid. Another wave at this point would be awful for everyone's mental health, and also for the NHS as they need to get on with delayed routine work. I really do think we should have waited longer before opening up indoors.

littlepeas · 17/05/2021 11:11
  1. I’m only worried that it will lead to further lockdowns/restrictions.
Everdreamer1990 · 17/05/2021 11:27

I'm 30 & unvaccinated. Myself & DD (1 yr) had Covid back in March. My antibody result came through positive last week. I know it means I might get it again but I trust my body to be able to fight off anymore virus & my experience last time was feeling hungover (headache, nauseous, tired, dizzy). I only had a tiny bit of breathlessness walking upstairs & a blocked nose for over a week.

DD only had a runny nose.

Honestly at this point, I just want to start living my life again. We're excited to be heading off to soft play this afternoon.

ineedaholidayandwine · 17/05/2021 11:31

My husband is 32 and a little worried, i think mostly because it feels so close to vaccination if he caught it he wouldn't be able to have his jab for at least a month after recovery.
We'll still go out for a drink etc but we'll stay outside for now. Hopefully they'll be extending the age group again soon

ineedaholidayandwine · 17/05/2021 11:33

I read over 35's could book from this week, could be wrong though
HelloOldSport · 17/05/2021 11:33

20's. Not worried at all. Off to the pub and for a meal Wednesday evening, and hopefully much more after that.

Yep! Same for me too! 32 and baby will be here in just under 3 weeks. So confused by midwife/NHS/RCOG saying I'm at risk but not being able to access the vaccine until 30s are (eventually) called up. I'm pretty much isolating myself now until baby is here - but with a school aged Dc and DH working as a teacher it's basically impossible to isolate at this point!

Update: my GP has texted me to invite me for my first jab! I'm getting it on Wednesday, massively excited.
