Are you 40? Will you be comfortable taking AZ?

I have name changed for this. Not a troll or anti vaxxer.
But very scared of the vaccine and Covid- so Rock/hard place

I turned 40 last month / I feel scared about taking this vaccine but according to the guidelines I’m ‘safe’? How safe am I from being 39 to 40?

"Honestly whatever choice you make is yours"
That's true but with this as for many things our choices impact on other people.

danadas · 16/05/2021 22:20

I'm 37 and had AZ in March. I am v high risk for blood clots and suffered no real side effects (tiredness for two days and a missed period).

Covid itself absolutely floored me and I am still not fully recovered five months later.

DarceyDashwood · 16/05/2021 22:25

I’m sorry but any legitimate worries about AS aside, comparing it to Russian Roulette is absolutely ridiculous.

MarcelineMissouri · 16/05/2021 22:25

I’m 41 and have had my first dose of AZ and will happily be having my second.

The analogy I gave on another thread was that if someone used the odds of me getting a clot from the vaccine and told me I had the same odds of winning the lottery I would not be walking around thinking I had won the lottery.

MybodyNochoice · 16/05/2021 22:26

@Fullofthejoysofspring never taken contraceptive pills.

Also this is misinformation- the clots are very different. This is called Vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) - this is vaccine induced.

I'm 47. Had both doses. No problem

Kakiweewee · 16/05/2021 22:32

38 and had my first dose, no real side effects either.

Biglumpycustard · 16/05/2021 22:33

I’m 40 on Sunday and I had the az vaccine last Saturday, I wasn’t concerned.

LargeYorkshirePuddingAndGravy · 16/05/2021 22:35

@MarcelineMissouri

I’m 41 and have had my first dose of AZ and will happily be having my second.

The analogy I gave on another thread was that if someone used the odds of me getting a clot from the vaccine and told me I had the same odds of winning the lottery I would not be walking around thinking I had won the lottery.

But you buy a lottery ticket in the hope that you will win. Everyone who plays the lottery thinks they might be in the very small percentage who win so why with the vaccine is the assumption reversed.

I see everyone comparing the risks of the vaccine with the risks of COVID. But, what if you never get COVID? You have avoided all risks.

FriedasCarLoad · 16/05/2021 22:39

I'm exactly forty and am now fully vaccinated.

It crossed my mind, but I didn't consider not getting vaccinated. My chances of that blood clot are higher if I get Covid, then they are from the vaccine, for a start!

Plus, honestly, I got the vaccine above all for the sake of herd immunity. I believe its the loving thing to do for the sake of the rest of society, particularly for those who are medically vulnerable.

I think my views are shaped by being a Christian though. If I believed things might happen randomly, or if I thought this life was everything, I might be more worried.

Hopefully not very worried though, because I think the stats are pretty conclusive on this.

MarcelineMissouri · 16/05/2021 22:42

@LargeYorkshirePuddingAndGravy maybe that analogy works in my head because I don’t play the lottery because I think the odds of winning are so low Grin Take the lottery and the ticket purchase out of the equation then and just imagine someone told you those were the odds that you were randomly going to get given some money. I still wouldn’t be expecting that I was going to get that money.

But in any event, it’s not just about my own personal risk is it. I’ve been vaccinated now so hopefully I will never get covid but I’ve never seen it as just about me. It’s my husbands industry and job, the ability of my kids to be able to just have a normal life again without worrying and following weird rules, being able to turn on the tv and not get bombarded with news about deaths and variants and oxygen supplies, not having to wear a mask to buy some milk. I want this to be over and that’s only going to happen if people get vaccinated.

PositiveLife · 16/05/2021 22:59

I was unsure. I was uncomfortable with the changing situation regarding the clots and wanted some extra time to think about it (ideally see more 40-49 data). However from what I understand its also less effective than the Pfizer/Moderna ones.

Luckily I happened to get a text from my gp offering the Pfizer one because their centre had an excess so I jumped at that.

OodieWoodie · 16/05/2021 23:17

You do have a choice, have it or don't have it. I do wonder though perhaps you're more likely to be offered AZ now if you're over 40 due to the other vaccines having to be ring fenced for those under 40.

I'm 41 and had my first dose of AZ this week. I have had side effects, shivers, temperature and vomiting. Not dropped dead with a blood clot yet.

I've successfully managed to avoid covid for the last 13 months despite DH working in the real world, two kids in school and going out and still doing stuff in accordance with the guidelines at the time. So realistically, I quite like my chances of not being seriously ill with Covid. But based on how badly I've been on my arse this week from the vaccine, I'm not quite so sure about that now.

Mathshelpme · 16/05/2021 23:19

I’m 40 and have had my first AZ jab about a month ago. Looking forward to the second and (hopefully) full immunity.

BoredtoTiers · 17/05/2021 00:10

I am CEV, so had AZ just before turning 40. I also have a genetic propensity to blood clots (but not the low platelet thing they've seen with AZ). I was and am fine. The risk for most women is far lower than taking the contraceptive pill. That's not to say I didn't worry a little before my 2nd vaccine, which was after they changed the age range, but statistically the odds are incredibly low.

TheTeenageYears · 17/05/2021 00:47

I would be interested to know if those who have had blood clots after having the vaccine have been tested for clotting disorders. Many people live with all sorts of undiagnosed health conditions and only find out when x, y or z happens. Our family has a history of blood clotting disorders and I have been tested and know it doesn't affect me or my DD so feel a certain amount of assurance that we are probably at less risk than the average person who has no idea that they may be walking around at greater risk of all types of blood clots without knowing it. It took 2 really serious blood clots for the first family member to find out they had the condition so even having one life threatening blood clot doesn't mean automatic testing for why it might have occurred. Unfortunately the system is set up to treat the symptom and not the cause.

Backofbeyond50 · 17/05/2021 00:59

Your body, your choice. Having the vaccine is a personal choice which I actually now feel is best kept private.
Unfortunately I let it slip I had the vaccine to the wrong person. Never again.

mooshie06 · 17/05/2021 07:14

Yes, had both mine age 40. Been on the pill for 15 years and lots of air travel so was happy with the very slight risk.

RumHoney · 17/05/2021 08:24

I'm 42 and had AZ at the start of the month. I'd have preferred one of the others, but the important thing for me was to have something in time for it to start having effect before this week's relaxation. That meant taking whatever I was offered at my first appointment rather than trying to game the booking system to try to get a different jab.

As it turned out I have virtually no side effects and while I'm not out of the 4 week window I'm not feeling particularly worried about it. And I'll be a lot more confident about eating in pubs and cafes when we go away for a week in a couple of days time.

IrisPurple · 17/05/2021 08:31

Already had Pfizer but was perfectly comfortable for my 45yo husband to get AZ 3 weeks ago. I was just desperate for him to get some protection.

"My Body No Choice" people - FFS get over yourselves, what do you think they're going to do? Impregnate you with alien DNA?? Fingers crossed you don't get Long Covid - I don't want my daughter paying for your NHS treatment and disability benefit for the rest of her life.

WaitingForNormality · 17/05/2021 08:35

I'm 32 and would happily accept AZ. At this point I'd just want anything to give some protection tbh and I'm comfortable with the risks as low as they are.

MybodyNochoice · 17/05/2021 08:40

@IrisPurple you sound like a very kind and understanding person. I’m not from the UK but worked here for 16 years and only used the NHS for the birth of my daughter. My tax pounds have gone to ‘look after’ others- some who need it, but also in there are people who make bad life choices and cost the healthcare system money and resources and take no responsibility- but funnily never thought like you.

MiniMaxi · 17/05/2021 09:19

@MybodyNochoice I’m same situ as you age wise. Almost certainly will have second but not comfortable with it.

MiniMaxi · 17/05/2021 09:20

Sorry that should say: I had my first at 39 now due second age 40

Branleuse · 17/05/2021 09:22

im 44 and have had both doses without any problem. We are so fortunate to have this vaccine available. The only reason we are able to come out of lockdown is because theres been such a high vaccine uptake which is creating a herd immunity. Annoying that some people will be riding on the benefit of that without doing their bit.
