So, is Monday under threat? Change to school masks or hugs?
@Whichjab ‘solve’ it? People are allowed to decline the vaccine you know. It should be seen as a ‘problem’ that needs to be ‘solved’.
Don't be ridiculous.

Of course it's a problem that needs solving.

They are endangering other people's lives, other peoples businesses, other peoples long term health.

I'm not sure what the solution is as I'm against making vaccines compulsory in the U.K. but at the same time I'm against people causing misery & suffering for others.

It's complicated with so many people here illegally, especially those who have been trafficked, but we NEED to find a solution & fast.

I suppose some kind of amnesty.

TheClaws · 15/05/2021 09:45

@Watapalava

Or a better way of putting it is let’s not restrict people anymore unless we have proof

No proof people will get sicker

No proof it evades vaccines

I don’t care if half the country get covid as long as infection is mild

Honestly some people have become so scared - honestly just get back out there living and back to work like the rest of us - it’s a joke calling for lockdowns when deaths ‘with covid’ are stupidly low and infections still not rising

Well, that sounds based on on science, so let's go!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/05/2021 09:51

The twat that infected a lot of people should be dealt with seriously

Apparently he was fined £1000. Recently I enquired how many fines were levied on the local shops and places of worship which stayed open against regulations even during the first lockdown, and the answer was none - a lot of "advice" was given (and largely ignored) but no fines, which is what I meant about enforcement not even being attempted in some sectors

The question "Why should we be restricted because others choose to carry on acting as if nothing has happened, mixing, ignoring rules and refusing vaccines?" is being heard more and more, and the issue has the potential to cause a lot of community friction, which worries me.
I expect most are aware that the background is complex, but the virus is here now and this is either a joint community effort or it's not ... so which is it?

AlmostSummer21 · 15/05/2021 09:52
@IloveJKRowling because we can’t keep locking down every time a new variant crops up on the off chance it might be more dangerous.
No one is suggesting locking down harder, merely that not lifting restriction on may 17 would have been sensible. Status quo is not 'going into lockdown'

We have NOT gone into lockdown everyone a variant crops up. This is a VoC - Variant of Concern & needs to be taken notice of! It's not 'on the iff chance' FFS

All those people who seem desperate to postpone the easing of restrictions on Monday just try and imagine how it feels if your livelihood is dependent on those restrictions easing.

So many people have spent a fortune buying stock and preparing for Monday. You can't take that away at such short notice when overall cases are still low, hospital admissions aren't rising and we're vaccinating huge numbers.

It’s utterly shit and the government should be supporting people and businesses better.

Ultimately if this takes off we’ll have restrictions for longer though. It’s short sighted to let things get out of control again,

KurtWilde · 15/05/2021 10:05

It's being reported now that the use of fear was totalitarian in this pandemic. Looking at some of the replies on this thread and others like it, they've done a bloody good job on some of you.

DelBocaVista · 15/05/2021 10:14

But it hasn't been out of control in all areas. Where I live our cases have consistently been well below the national average despite bordering a hotspot- and that was before vaccinations. Businesses have shut and people have lost their livelihoods.

We're in a completely different situation now and that should be reflected in policy.

RedcurrantPuff · 15/05/2021 10:16

Our rates are 19 per 100000. Never been so low.

MarshaBradyo · 15/05/2021 10:17

Just looked 11 here and still a drop from last week

Leonardsgirl · 15/05/2021 10:18

I'm in London. Less than 15 here.

This is exactly what’s happened in Glasgow. Told on Tuesday they’d move to level 2. Had the rug pulled from under them at 5pm last night. Nicola Sturgeon throws them £750, big wow. And yet there are people who think this is good leadership.
RedcurrantPuff · 15/05/2021 10:20

60 people in hospital and 3 in ICU in the whole country but no, let’s keep businesses locked down and people unable to earn a full wage for even longer due to a handful of cases in a localised area.

Abraxan · 15/05/2021 10:27

I'm in Sheffield.
The rate is 51 per 100000 for the city - it was much much higher previously. It's above average but looking at the interactive maps seems concentrated in specific areas.

The part of the city I live in had less than 3 cases, classed as 0% and the area I work in is 10 cases in total in last week.

It's appalling.

DelBocaVista · 15/05/2021 10:28

There aren't enough cases in my area to be statistically relevant!!
Yes some people think businesses should stay closed

I could cry for those poor businesses, let alone the mental health of those who live in Glasgow. Just as they thought they could begin to live anything like a normal life, it’s snatched away with barely any notice.

But it’s the businesses I feel deeply sorry for. How the hell will they manage this latest disaster? All the perishable stock, all the advertising and preparations

I agree. It’s appalling. And exactly what would be happening in England if at the last minute the Prime Minister announced that we’d wait 2-3 weeks

ilovebrie8 · 15/05/2021 10:37

Same where I am @DelBocaVista no cases at all. if needed it should be localised lockdown like Scotland have done. How the heck do you shut an entire country where most have no cases...it’s bonkers! Thankfully Boris applied common sense

ilovebrie8 · 15/05/2021 10:39

Feel sorry for those in Glasgow who got stopped at last minute ..

AlmostSummer21 · 15/05/2021 10:49
@TheClaws we do not have the police or army manpower to implement such measures
Yes we do, in areas of concern.

AlmostSummer21 · 15/05/2021 10:55

I agree, it’s an absolute shambles. We shouldn’t br getting any variants in from abroad. The government have really fucked up. I’m done with the rules now

@RedcurrantPuff

Well, that'll show them!

🙄🙄

AlmostSummer21 · 15/05/2021 10:58

@picturesandpickles

If I was Johnson i would be asking 'what could I do now that would make this situation less risky' - maybe something like:
 • reverse the guidance on masks in schools
 • reverse guidance on overnights stays in family homes
 • reverse guidance on close physical contact
 • carry on with unlocking hospitality
 • carry on with in home meet ups - but really emphasise need for distancing

That seems a decent half way house, while we wait two more weeks for data.

The problem from the satrt os we have carried on while we wait for data - then had to over react. We should be cautious for a shorttime, then hopefully things would be less messy when we do realise there is a problem.

But Johnson is not going to change - he is absolutely rubbish at managing covid.

Exactly, but that's FAR too much common sense for BJ & his back benchers!!
lightand · 15/05/2021 11:01

@Summercocktailsinthesnow

AZ vaccine DOES work against the Indian variant, they know this already. So the issue is not the vaccine as such, but the transmissible rate. Many millions are still waiting for second doses, many millions are unvaccinated. So the potential for things to go wrong is still high. Hence the decision to fast track all second does to over fifties, and to try and get as many people vaccinated as possible. This is now a race against time.
Does not work well according to this, so no, appears they dont know this already. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9581581/Experts-warn-vaccines-effective-reducing-transmission-Indian-variant.html
AlmostSummer21 · 15/05/2021 11:07

@RedcurrantPuff

Why not wait 2-3 weeks to see if the Indian variant is or isn't more transmissible &/or more deadly???

Because it’s never just 2/3 weeks is it. Our kids were supposed to have a “week of online learning” in January. It ended up being 3 months. This government are corrupt and lie constantly. Why does anyone believe a single thing they come out with?

It's not about believing it not believing. It's about giving the scientists the opportunity to see how the VoC Is behaving & whether it's more transmissible and/or more deadly or not.

Stopping household mixing inside would have been sensible. Very sensible. Keeping masks in schools - sensible.

I would have preferred not opening up hospitality inside & compensating affected businesses, but if they chose instead to allow it to go ahead, to enforce the rules.

It's all being so badly handled, again.

Oh dear god. I'm losing the will to live.

At least try to understand the science, just a tiny bit.
