GP not allowing me to have second dose of AZ.

Not sure if this is normal?
Had my first dose at a pharmacy as no availability at GP.
Got a text from GP to book my second dose in. Then the invitation was cancelled so I asked why and got told because I didn't have the first there I cannot have the second Confused.

Had another text today to book in 2nd at the GP.

I just don't get why they're saying no to me having it done there. Has anyone else had this?

Will the pharmacy not do the second ?

Pixie2015 · 12/05/2021 20:59

Most areas have rule where you get your first you get second so numbers of vaccinations can be calculated

Scarby9 · 12/05/2021 21:00

I thought you had both jabs in the same place?
A friend was given his first jab way ahead of schedule when he took his 90 year old FIL for his first jab towards the end of the afternoon during the first week of vaccines in England. They had spare Pfizers and offered him one. Except he had to go back (300 mile round trip) to the same place for his second!

Tal45 · 12/05/2021 21:04

That seems ridiculous, we had to book our second at a place an hour away as it was the only option. I was hoping the GP might ring in the mean time and i'd have my second there instead. I don't know why I can have it at a completely different pharmacy but not at my GP. Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Interesting replies, thank you.
The pharmacist can do the second it's just a faff to get there when the GP is only 2 minutes away.
They wouldn't give me a reason just no I cannot have it done there.

It’s because their vaccine allocation depends on the number of first doses they’ve done, if they gave you a second they potentially wouldn’t have one for someone who attended for their first dose there. It would get incredibly complex and unworkable if everyone started going to different centres as the vaccine is allocated rather than being ordered by the centre

Interesting answers. DH and I have both had to go to different centres for our second ones, and they were different centres from each others too. Both our first centres didn't even come up as an option when booking the second ones.

If you book on the National system then you're booking both at once so you can choose different places for your second. But if first is through text you only book one at a time, and because they haven't made your second booking they need you to go back to the same place.

That's odd, DH and I booked ours online and we are both going to different mass vaccination centres for the second one. We had lots of different options for the second dose, just chose the nearest.

lurker101 · 12/05/2021 22:16

Is it because of how GPs are being paid for the vaccination? As I understand it GPs are being paid for both doses, but only after providing the second dose, except in exceptional circumstances where they can be paid for an individual dose. So it’s probably not worth the admin for them to chase up to get paid for your vaccine so they’re likely wanting you to go back to the previous centre.

InTheRoomWhereItHappens · 12/05/2021 22:30

The payment being made only after the second dose was scrapped when the 3 week gap between doses was changed to 12 weeks. The cash flow problems this would have caused would have broken surgeries which would have had 3 months' worth of costs to pay out. 2nd dose deliveries are based on 1st doses given. The logistics of it all are interesting to say the least.

lurker101 · 12/05/2021 22:33

Interesting thanks @InTheRoomWhereItHappens I must have missed that

BitOfAFaff · 13/05/2021 19:50

I can have it there now. They sent an email saying they made a mistake.
