When can we stop wearing masks for school drop off/pick up?

Standing outside, 2 metres away from each other, things opening up etc.
Does anyone know when face masks at school drop off pick up will go?

Yes, they can as it’s private property. They can say you can’t come into school grounds if you’re not wearing one. At the school I teach at, our Head has said it’s masks in the playground for quite a while yet as far as she’s concerned.[/quote]
Masks? Outdoors on the playground? That is frankly insane

MapleBee · 11/05/2021 09:20

It protects the unvaccinated teachers if you need to speak to them.

murbblurb · 11/05/2021 09:33

At our village school the clearly exasperated headmaster had to tell the parents to keep their distance and stop their feral toddlers from running riot and touching everything. When that was ignored he mandated masks at drop off and pick up. I keep well clear of the school run anyway due to shit parking , engines left running so I don't know if the women ( it is all women) listened.

This is kind of the natural state of toddlers though

Frazzled2207 · 11/05/2021 09:45

I don't think it's ever been a legal requirement .Our school asked us to and I doubt they will finish soon tbh. I think to protect the teachers more than anything.

whataballbag · 11/05/2021 09:47

Never I hope. Saves me slapping makeup on 😂

BogRollBOGOF · 11/05/2021 12:01

I haven't worn them anyway. By the time the rule came in I was already wearing visors because of repeated difficulties with masks. Wearing a visor on the playground in autumn/ winter weather is useless as a Covid measure and more harm than good in poor weather conditions and grappling with a child with ASD. I have ended up giving up on visors since due to repeated difficulties with them.

I have been sensible about keeping my distance. Ironically parents had been fairly mindful about distance until they could no longer hear/ see conversation clearly and the masks killed off the social distancing as people came closer to be able to hold a conversation!

There's a 1:1000 chance of passing Covid in an outdoors environment where there hasn't been any other higher risk contact between people. Most areas have very low rates in the community, so the chances of a mask actually preventing a case of Covid spreading in a max 20 min window in outdoor space is pretty negligible. Most school pickups are less than the 15 mins that count as close contact.

It is entirely a measure of performance safety in itself and farcical when it's far, far more likely that the virus is going from household to household via the children spending 6+ hours together at school.

Oh and most of our parents should be vaccinated now. My area went into the upper 30s over Easter, plus a lot of double vaccinated healthcare parents.

@Suranjeep
whether said headteacher will get compliance from the masses in the coming weeks won’t be her decision though.
Of course it’ll be her decision, we’ve a strong policy on no mask, no entry to the playground to drop off. Simple as that.

That’s what my son’s school is like.

There are two teachers standing at the main entrance gate and no mask = no entry.

They used to let us in if we didn’t have a mask (if we forgot for example) if we agreed to stay 2m away from everyone else, but they don’t even allow that anymore.

mfwannabe · 11/05/2021 16:13

So what happens if you forget your mask at pick up?

herecomesthsun · 11/05/2021 16:26

@picturesandpickles

Dunno. I'll probably wear masks past the required stage as I think the UK is being pretty stupid rushing to ditch a low-cost, low-hassle mitigation measure.
same here

You aren't allowed to collect your children and they store them overnight for you Grin

(We had heavy rain at pick up today. Masks plus hoods led to teachers having no idea which parent was which! Felt like I just needed sunglasses to complete the get up...

ThornAmongstRoses · 11/05/2021 16:27

So what happens if you forget your mask at pick up?

They go and collect the child from the classroom and bring them out to the main gate.

guest2013 · 11/05/2021 16:32

Never started wearing them outside tbh. Its outside and it's crazy to have to wear them. Honestly anyone still doing so needs to get a grip.

LadyPenelope68 · 11/05/2021 16:34

@ThornAmongstRoses
Similar here, either at gate you’re given a mask to wear or your child is brought to the gate. However, if you want your child brought to the gate then you have to wait until all other children have been seen out to their parents.

ThornAmongstRoses · 11/05/2021 16:34

We have to do it because it’s the school’s rules.

It not about us ‘needing to get a grip’ just stop doing it.

Ours is based on the Lea guidelines, which are based on the government guidelines in general.

So social distancing will be in line with what we do in general I'd have thought. Masks too to an extent.

So when not needed in other settings then it'll go for our schools in our Lea I expect.

Abraxan · 11/05/2021 16:39

@AmandaPlease

Just don't wear it. It's not even recommended, let alone compulsory, to wear masks outside (especially if like my school everyone queues 2m apart).
We have been to a few outdoor eateries and a couple of pubs. Although outdoors they all say to wear masks until sat at your table.

So it's not just schools where masks are being worn outdoors

BelleBlueBell · 11/05/2021 16:46

I know the LA here said that masks had to be worn so I guess either they or the individual schools will say when they don't. It's definitely not any kind of country wide blanket rule. I know the next county does it differently.

I'd say ask the HT but they are probably a bit sick of parents asking questions that they can't answer so why not wait for further instructions?

PicsInRed · 11/05/2021 16:46

@CookPassBabtridge

I've stopped wearing mine, we're outdoors and don't get close.
This. It's no longer legally required, we're all outside. Common sense.
homesickinscotland · 11/05/2021 16:50

Can't wait until they go from school, seeing as we're outside and in a queue 2m apart. What really seems silly is that there is a food truck near us that insists you wear them in the socially distanced outdoor queue and has covid marshals to ensure compliance. Needless to say I don't bother with the food truck despite DD's whining! I can understand up at the counter but the queues are so long I can't face it otherwise.

FloraFauna27 · 11/05/2021 17:01

Hopefully soon. I HATE not being able to smile at my DD when she runs out of school, and not being able to kiss her straight away. It’s so unnatural.

Masks outside is not mandatory outside. The school cannot force you to wear one for pick up - even if you go onto their land! They can't arrest you for not wearing a mask... the school could tell you to wear a pink hat and clown shoes to pick up of they want, but they can't enforce it.

Our school have asked for masks to be worn at pick up, bit seeing as all parents are waiting on public highway Iand many others do not - yet if I have to cross the threshold onto school land for after school club I put on one briefly for that, because I don't want to cause offence or upset my child with school.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/05/2021 18:22

Balls. Our school has said they're reviewing at half term. Hmm

I'm so fed up of struggling to follow a conversation when some voices are inaudible through the fabric and there's no lip reading. I need to see adult faces again Sad

There's no scientific justification to this crap.

herecomesthsun · 11/05/2021 19:34

@BogRollBOGOF There IS scientific justification, as we now are accumulating evidence for airborne transmission and this would support very careful use of masks.

" Reducing
airborne transmission of virus requires measures to avoid
inhalation of infectious aerosols, including ventilation, air
filtration, reducing crowding and time spent indoors, use
of masks whenever indoors, attention to mask quality and
fit, and higher-grade protection for health-care staff and
front-line workers.
